Have this locked in from the Target B2G1, hoping it ships soon, hyped to see how the PQ is

It's ok. I watched on Monday and at first wasn't sure if it was a new remaster, but as the movie moves on it looked to be that it was in fact a 2K remaster, but still not 100%.

Still, best I've seen the film look and truly a great film even though I still don't buy
[Show spoiler]Nick Nolte's descent into madness.

Really? I think this is one of the most vivid and convincing examples I've ever seen.
[Show spoiler]It's not flashy if you're looking for "a moment" where it happens, but the steady accumulation of quotidian stressors, the gnawing pain of the tooth ever present, the paranoia about exclusion, the weight of responsibility, the character's family history, and most of all (what really makes it land in 2024) the absolute certainty that Something's Going On Around Here based on tenuously linked "evidence" and conjecture.

I think all your points are solid, but it just felt that he went from
[Show spoiler]a 1 to a 10 on the mental breakdown spectrum a bit too quickly. Still, the mind is a fragile thing, and I'm sure many have had mental breakdowns for far less.I still think it's an exceptional performance from Nick Nolte
Looking at the 1999 nominees for best actor I'm not sure who should have won, but that was one of the toughest years for actors as they were all so good. With that being said, I don't think Roberto Benigni should have won.

One of the worst acting botches from the Academy, ever. Nolte, Hanks, McKellan, and Norton are all just so good in such different and striking ways, and Benigni in contrast is just embarrassing. Quintessential example of the Academy getting caught up in a fleeting industry zeitgeist and being unable to recognize work that will be truly enduring. I think Nolte obviously stands above all the rest, though, but the others minus Benigni would have been fine winners.

I totally bought it all the way, the complete spiral. Start to finish. Just got notice my copy will be here tomorrow. I bought the Shout Newhart DVD's and they're just horrible. Why am I not surprised they don't care a bit about quality for this? Why even release it though?

Thanks for the tip, I snagged Affliction from the Target sale, along with Over the Edge (1979) and The Departed 4K UHD.

McKellen was grossly robbed, imo, but yeah, even Nolte would've been a more deserving winner than Benigni (who was the worst of the nominees).

Shout's prices are nuts - $27.99 on Amazon for Affliction is ridiculous. I got it in the Target 3 for 2 sale (along with another Shout disc, Over the Edge) which took the price to around $20 per Blu - but that's still not cheap at all.

We can only be grateful they didn't limit it to their website!

Watching this now, I think it is a new scan but some of the “original film elements” used seem to be of lesser quality. I don’t think it’s an older master, it just has a very hazy look.

Arrived today. I love Schrader and this movie is dynamite but it’s pretty difficult to recommend paying full price for this Shout Blu - $28 for no 4K, no booklet, no extras besides trailer, no curation or particularly good art direction. I paid $20 in a Target deal but it’s still too much. Wait for a sale. At least it's a dual-layer Blu and the main title is around 32GB.

Shout sucks lately, at least when KL puts out a bare bones release they aren't charging an arm and a leg. Also what a shame that one of Schrader's best films gets such a slap dash release.

At least they didn't shuffle it off as a site exclusive limited edition. But, yeah, Shout sucks ass.

Kino's release of Hardcore is so much better than what we've got here.

Mine arrived today: an eco-case that's covered (on the inside) with what looks like those hard water spots that gave the people in those dishwashing liquid commercials such a hard time.

But hey, the good news: only one light scratch.
