That gives me a slight slimmer of hope. The only one that I know got a release that was in a similar situation was On the Rock with Bill Murray.

I was thinking on this subject again after seeing the movie last weekend and Spike Lee certainly is a director who has enough pull to get what he wants, so it's certainly possible this one could end up in The Criterion Collection or something at some point down the line. Time will tell.

8/10 or 4 stars for me. Strong stuff. The script isn’t always airtight but Lee’s direction is flawless. And of course Denzel is awesome.

The money drop & chase sequence was interminable (esp with the band playing cross-cut with the Yankee fans chanting on the train). This should’ve been cut down; would’ve helped with the tension of the story. In fact, cutting about 10 minutes out of the movie would’ve helped. The actors were great, though!

I think Spike should stay away from Asian classics. To me it was 5.5 to 6 out of 10. It has one of the worst scores I can recall in recent memory, which felt odd in a film so highly connected to music.
All the stakes felt frictionless, any tense situation gets resolved easily, fairly quickly, and cleanly. It's like the film felt allergic to drama. It's certainly no taut thriller or crime story. Denzel and Wright are awesome as always, but the material doesn't match their capabilities. |

Was able to catch this after work yesterday since my local finally had some decent times that worked for me. Second half is so good it almost allows you to forget how godawful the first half is at times. Washington is as magnetic as ever and Wright steals every scene he's in, but Hadera is one of the biggest miscasts I've seen this year and Drossin's score is atrocious and obtrusive.
The second half ditches the sterile, digital look of the first in favor of a much warmer image that's either shot on film or layered with a filter or something (either way, it works). It also ditches Hadera and Drossin's score no longer lingers and meanders in every scene for no apparent reason. There's a genuine sense of tension post-bag drop and Rocky has some good back-and-forth scenes with Denzel. Admittedly walked out a bit more lukewarm than I would have liked. When it works, it's pretty fantastic, but there are also some baffling creative decisions and I felt like the script could've used another run-through to better explain David King's psyche. The way a lot of people act in certain situations, especially the first half, just felt really unnatural to me. Worth the price of admission for Wright alone, though. |

Excellent film. It's a remake but it's a remake done well and for our time. I really enjoyed it and look forward to seeing it again. Fingers crossed it gets a 4K physical media release. Would love to place it on my shelf next to High and Low.

I thought it was a very, very decent remake, truly in the spirit of Spike. Definitely worth watching. Hopefully, just like it happened with The Irishman, we'll get a proper bluray release.
