How do the 88 Films and VinSyn for this compare in color grading? I thought 88's first one looked great and noticeably better than what I saw from the VinSyn. (Already blind bought the 88 anyway, but just curious.)

Sometimes, yes, but not always IMO. For example, while 88's presentations of BLACK CAT and THE ICEMAN COMETH are certainly superior, I would honestly say VinSyn wins on RIGHTING WRONGS and MAGIC CRYSTAL.

I would disagree. VinSyn Righting Wrongs has more frame errors, which is unacceptable, 88 also has ultimate version/ending randomizer it's a better package for fans. Magic Crystal has better restoration work and more accurate retro color grading as well. I specifically imported these because of those reasons. VinSyn hasn't done one HK disc that has been released in the UK that made me want it as the superior version (haven't seen China O'Brien yet to compare Eureka). I also own Iceman and Black Cat and agree with you on those.

88's RIGHTING WRONGS definitely wins on extras and packaging but I just find that color grading to be awful (was not aware of the frame errors in VinSyn though, save for the credits at least), and I think their MAGIC CRYSTAL presentation is too overexposed from what I've seen. Many exterior scenes are blown out.

Is there a picture comparison somewhere between the 88 & Vinegar for Black Cat 1? Curious to see if the Vinegar really looks that much worse.

Does this disc suffer from 88's current scratch problems? Don't want to risk importing this if it is

I’ve never had a single scratch problem with any of 88’s discs and I own dozens.

This was not great but definitely good one. Stand out scenes are chase in mountains which for some reason made think of James Bond movie and fight in steel factory. Never got around getting first movie(partly because familiar with la femme nikita concept already and partly have seen posts not so much action there) but may change mind because of flashbacks in beginning of pt2.

And 88 disc even has resume play which is rareish for them!

Oh yeah no a ski chase is classic Bond.

Its a completely different film to this imo, I’ve never seen Nikita or any of the other rip-offs of it but hews a lot more closely to it afaik. Also she actually speaks a lot more in that one and is a lot more vulnerable rather than the sort of Terminator thing she has going on in this.

Resume play is a god-send as someone who’s constantly getting distracted and getting up to do stuff and interrupting my movies. I don’t know if its expensive or something and thats why a lot of 88 releases don’t have it, but more inexcusable is Paramount never having it in any form.

I loved the first movie. Black Cat 2 is just ok. A bit OTT in parts. I also liked The Assassin/Point of No Return with Bridget Fonda back in the day. I never saw Nikita though.

First Black Cat is in a different league. It's a great mix of some action that is pretty realistic, espionage, romance, I like it more everytime I see it. The first 10 minutes are rough as hell that English dialogue is awful, it's so bad that it's good though, settles down a ton after she gets in the program. Black Cat 2 felt like she was a side character, too much over the top action/scifi stuff, felt like an Albert Pyun film, just didn't feel like a continuation of the first one on flavor, maybe it will grow on me over time but I don't see it.
