Hands-On Review of Gran Turismo (2023)
![]() I recently watched this movie because I noticed it was shot on the RED cameras, specifically the V-RAPTOR 8K, which is known as one of the best cameras for Hollywood filming. (however, it's hard to make a judgment). The picture quality, viewed through a VPN on Netflix USA (Dolby Vision + Atmos), was outstanding! Despite this, I was slightly disappointed by the HDR brightness quality on Netflix (peak brightness reaches around 700 nits, with an average brightness throughout of about 300 nits). I'm curious to see if there are any differences on Apple TV/iTunes. P.S: If the average brightness throughout the movie falls below the HDR range (typically between 400 to 600 nits), it may not utilize the benefits of HDR concept. Also, simply focusing on high peak brightness levels can result in overly bright images that lack the detail. The "ideal" HDR should strike a balance. Has anyone seen the 4K Blu-ray disc version (specifically with more comments about the HDR presentation)? Technical reviews (including blu-ray.com, @KenBrown ' review) rate the PQ as 5 out of 5. Last but not least, the movie itself is good! Cheers Last edited by thebox; 05-13-2024 at 09:47 AM. |

I wanted to share some insights about the differences between HDR10+ and HDR10 for reference purposes, using a scene from The Aeronauts (2019) on Prime Video that reaches about 1000 nits.
In this comparison: . HDR10 (right side): The TV is using static metadata. . HDR10+ (left side): The TV is using dynamic metadata to optimize brightness and color levels scene by scene (or frame by frame), allowing for improved contrast and highlight details. . DTM adjusted brightness and contrast to preserve details in highlights, preventing overexposure. It also somewhat improved colour rendition. . Added: 2nd photo (HDR10+ vs SDR) and 3rd photo (HDR10 vs SDR) Disregard color and resolution factors in this sample, as I captured it using a smartphone without a tripod and with no white balance applied. The focus here is on the bright highlight details to showcase the differences between HDR10+ and HDR10. You can slide from left to right to compare their respective visual effects. HDR Comparison Note1: I'm using an OLED Panasonic GZ1000 (peak luminance is about 750 nits). Note2: I'm using the external page because I couldn't embed the photo slider directly into the forum format due to script tags. If anyone knows how to embed such content, I'd be happy to hear. Note3: Best viewed or visualized on the desktop version. If you find this sample interesting, I plan to experiment further by comparing SDR vs HDR10 vs HDR10+/DV with a more comprehensive analysis. I'll use a proper camera on a tripod to capture images more accurately resembling what I see on the TV (SDR/HDR calibrated with Calman and D6 by myself) Feel free to share your thoughts or suggestions for future comparisons. Cheers Last edited by thebox; 05-15-2024 at 07:19 AM. |

Full shots here: HDR Comparison P.S. For modern displays, 0 is no longer the best sharpness option. On my OLED, the sharpness is set to 0 due to my viewing distance, while on the projector, it is set to 25 (out of 50). Maybe I should have lowered the sharpness for the projector for comparison purposes, even though sharpness is not the main objective. Brightness and Contrast: The image on the Laser Projector shows good detail in both bright and dark areas but may lack the infinite contrast of OLED. The texture and detail of the dome are clear, but the shadows are not as deep. Colour Accuracy: The Laser Projector is not as accurate as OLED (yes, both devices were calibrated targeting the D65 reference white point). The colours in the OLED image appear rich and natural, particularly in the sky and the texture of the dome. Summary: Laser Projector (Hisense UST): Provides excellent, brightness and a good HDR experience but has slight compromises in contrast and colour accuracy compared to OLED. OLED TV: Offers clearly superior contrast and colour accuracy, resulting in a more immersive and visually appealing HDR10+ image. Conclusion: Both devices showcase the strengths of HDR10+ dynamic tone mapping, but the OLED provides a more consistent experience due to its inherent advantages in contrast, colour accuracy, and uniformity. In a nutshell, a much better overall image fidelity, as we already know. |

I'd like to introduce a new feature I've been waiting to implement for a long time! It's the ATMOS Analyzer for any movie with Dolby Atmos audio format. I've spent 2 years capturing audio from 4K movies using my own sound analyser tool. With the help of AI, I capture audio from the speakers, which generates and analyses frequencies and outputs the results, all with my own comments & parameters. Due to the specific frequency (< 120 Hz), LFE (or the subwoofer) is not captured. I've included this feature (experimental) in the movie guide (under Atmos Analyser section).
Custom filter search: Here’s the rating scale: Average (Scores between 25-35): Audio quality is acceptable but may lack depth or clarity in certain aspects. Good (Scores between 36-44): Audio quality is clear and well-balanced, providing a satisfying listening experience. Excellent (Scores between 45-50): Audio quality is outstanding, with immersive surround effects, clear dialogue, and dynamic range. Note: These ratings don't intend to be an absolute reference but serve as a guideline to help you find good-to-excellent Dolby Atmos tracks on streaming platforms for showcasing your equipment or personal enjoyment. They are not a comparison against physical 4K BD discs, which have much higher bit rates. Streaming platforms use the DD+ (E-AC-3) codec to deliver Dolby Atmos content, typically ranging from 384 kbps to 768 kbps only... |

News: Introducing the Optimal Soundbar Pairing Section (in experimental and "refining" mode)!
Changelog - [May 27, 2024]: Beta Version 0.7 This new section will help us find the perfect Soundbar "match" for our favorite 4K movies with Atmos support and offer guidance for our next sound system upgrade (for now, soundbars only). What can we expect from the "Optimal Soundbar Pairing" guide? Answer: I've developed a new algorithm to display Soundbar recommendations tailored to match Atmos content. I think this feature opens up a whole new world of possibilities for enjoying 4K content and its lossless audio formats at their "finest". I've also added a new custom search filter to find movies paired with specific soundbars, each labeled with its release year. Please give it a try and let me know your thoughts, feedback, and suggestions! Happy pairing! Cheers Last edited by thebox; 05-27-2024 at 09:54 AM. |

A relevant week in terms of 4K titles available on the streaming platforms!
Some of them are: "Hit Man" , "The Greatest Showman" (AU only), The Contractor (UK only) and "Under Paris" (Netflix) "Mean Girls" and "Maidaan"(Prime Video). P.S: Further details, including HDR analysis and Atmos scores, will be included over the weekend on the webpage. Changelog (June 7, 2024): . The streamer logo is now included on all movie pages (similarly as we see on the homepage under the latest additions). Additionally, the film feel and HDR quality icons have been removed to make the pages aesthetically cleaner; however, these can still be seen in the appropriate sections under the movie details area. . 4K Movies Slim Stats page: The first two columns are now fixed so that no "child row (+)" is shown for the mobile version (regular screen mode). . To-Do List: Finalize FPS info; Adjust a minor issue with the 'HDR10' icon (unable to differentiate between a regular HDR10 or SDR title with the removal of the HDR quality icon); Adjust and organize the TV/Sound pairing section to show fewer models for a clearer look; Implement other minor enhancements. |

I forgot to mention that the new page will be accessible by the following button, right after the 4K Disc availability info, in case of a 'Yes' : [I just realized that a minor tweak on the alignment is needed, though😊]
Otherwise, no button is shown. |

Hey everyone:
Just a quick update to let you know that I have cloned the Slim Stats page and the BD version has been created now! There are only a couple of movies there so far, but let's give it a bit of time to have more movies on the physical format entered. ![]() You can check it out here. And that's it... From now on, I'll focus on data entry and bug fixes/corrections. No more new features for now. Let's refine and try to make the current ones more solid and useful for everyone! |
