Kino does good 4K transfers when they want to. Face/off is one of their worst 4K’s

The last two UHD discs I bought from them were Spaceballs and Hard Target, both had problems. Spaceballs was missing a line that they should have fixed, and Hard Target had a very public disc replacement program for an error that QC should have found. I agree some of their discs look good, but they just aren't that good at what they do.

I only noticed a few compression issues on the highlights, and obviously the last scene is in the wrong color space. I think the rest is pretty great though. I did check out a 35mm scan of it, and from what I saw the color grading was different (less warm during the scenes around the funeral shootout). I think Lambs is easily their worst, but I'd be happy to shit on Kino more if you can think of other titles / issues with this disc haha. It also helps it's a MAJOR upgrade from the blu.

Kino did a good job with their Dressed to Kill 4K disc, so I have faith this should turn out well. Snake Eyes has had a bare bones release since it came out on DVD in early 1999, so I hope they can put some extras on this new release.

I love De Palma as much as the next man, but this was where his slow decline into poorer movies began, for me. It's good, but not great. And I don't care much for the alternate ending. Just the theatrical cut looking and sounding great, and I'll be happy.

Even Vinegar Syndrome has problems with discs and so does Kino Lorber. IMO without Kino Lorber most of these films would either never get a Blu-ray and UHD release. They have some work to do in the UHD department with their releases but me personally I love this label. You have to take the good with the bad. They are a boutique label and sure they can improve and should improve their products. Just hope Snake Eyes turns out to be a good UHD from them. Hard Target was disappointing but they made it right with the replacement discs.

"footage exists" doesn't mean there is a directors cut. Home video shows if there was an apetite for a director to go in there and make a directors cut things like DVD special editions and then later blu-ray would have already yielded it by now.

Happy for this theatrical release to be coming. More licensing. Mooaarrr KL. More 90's fare. Do eeeet

Minor thing, but I hope the spine doesn't say CAGE SNAKE EYES like other releases. I like to alphabetize.

They've had some problematic releases but their Leviathan 4K is pretty damn solid, IMO.

I have Spaceballs, Misery, Hard Target, Mystery Men, Face/Off, Changing Lanes, Kindergarten Cop, Tropic Thunder, Serpico, etc. Every single one with a slip has come somewhat damaged. They use that crappy matte finish stock or something and it just sucks. They do make a decent 4K but with the issues piling up I can see why some have a problem with it. I love De Palma and I will probably pick this one up when it comes out.

How was this not brought to my attention much sooner!? Anyway, this is incredibly exciting. In an ideal world I'd have a cut with the original ending restored as it would bump the film up to a full masterpiece for me. The ending we have theatrically is fine, I actually dig how soberingly anti-climactic it is, but the first one is more of a payoff which seems missing in the finished theatrical cut. Still extremely happy this is finally getting a UHD, it'll be a day one.

From a Twitter user on the OG ending:

I don't think most people would mind if KL just came out and said "they won't let us have it" or "it's too costly to reconstruct" or whatever. It's the fact that their horrible social media person keeps lying and gaslighting people that irritates the hell out of me. Saying things like "it's just a rumour" and "have you ever seen it" and then just not responding when people actually link the YouTube video of the footage is pure troll behaviour and has no excuse.

The cut was never released previously, they don't need to deal with it at all and that'd be just fine.

I mean, is there the slim possibility that they DID actually get the alternate ending included/restored but that they want to tease until they decide to release proper details on the release? Of course they have a track record of not doing anything, nor would it excuse how they treat their social media presence, but... gah, I'm trying to be hopeful even in the face of almost definite disappointment. Such is the way of a Snake Eyes lover!

I guess gaining access to vault stuff or if things were even kept is always a big question mark. From what I understand if the old Corona Coming Attractions sight and Ain't it Cools was to be believed, at some point in May or June of 1998 (this is just going off my memory of reading it) a completed version of Snake Eyes was tested for a preview audience. Very shortly after that it was decided to reshoot the ending and it was hastily rewritten, reshot, rescored, re-edited for it's August 7, 1998 release.
