Caligula is a highly artistic erotic film that someone shoehorned hardcore scenes into.
It is absolutely not a “porn” film with no artistic merit |

Regardless, there are plenty of movies with "hardcore" content that still have merit as art.
I personally really like Metzger's Score, for example. Now unsimulated sex acts are in vogue again for many shorts and movies. Doesn't mean they should be discounted as valid movies in any way because of this. |

What happens to Proculus on his wedding day, with his bride, who has just been raped by the Emperor and is forced to watch, makes that irrefutably clear. When the Roman guard is caught drunk on duty, and what's done to him as a result, well, that's also a testament to just how right you are. Look, people can like the film, but at least be honest with yourselves that it's garbage without any actual artistic merit. If you want art, watch "I, Claudius." If you're only interested in brutality, gore, and pornographic trash, then watch "Caligula." And let me also point out that I needed to keep my descriptions of the two referenced scenes above rather vague and nondescript because alluding to them in any detail would likely be deemed too vulgar for polite, civil discourse and company. If you've never seen the movie, then watch it, but see it as originally intended by the guy who finished and then released it. And no, I'm not referring to the newer so-called "Ultimate" Cut because according to what I've read, that's not what Guccione intended at all. What was intended was what he released to theaters originally, and then put out on VHS. |

Whatever your take is on Caligula there's some interesting thoughts by those who participated in it. From an article I found:
Although it was subsequently released in the U.S., officials here banned the film because of its gratuitous content. Vidal later asked for his name to be removed from the movie's credits, while actor Malcolm McDowell, who played Caligula, said: 'I'm proud of the work I did, there's no question about that. 'But there's all the raunchy stuff, the blatant, modern-day porn Bob introduced into the film. That to me was an absolutely outrageous betrayal and quite unprecedented.' Love Malcolm McDowell.....he tells it like it is. Here's the article: https://www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/u...d-6890583.html |

Yeah, McDowell has often said that he considers the theatrical version a betrayal. He and Brass hated Bob Guccione (and the feeling was mutual). I met Malcolm at a convention in 2022 and when I brought up the new cut, he yelled, "I think it's all BULLSHIT!" Lmao. Thankfully a friend of his talked him into watching a screener and he really liked it. He appeared at a number of different screenings in the States when it was shown late last year. He's gonna be at a UK screening, too, just wish they'd announce a date already so I can book it off!

I'm fascinated by how bizarre it really is, and have some curiosity about this new Cut of the movie. Supposedly the "Restorationist" and "Financier" have attempted to turn it into less of a grotesque production and more of an actual normal movie. So, I'm wondering what it will look like in comparison to the monstrosity that preceded it.

Sex in movies is not what's depicted in "Caligula," and if that's what you think, then you're the one that needs to wake up obviously. |

The scenes of sexual violence you described earlier were shot by Brass and are still in The Ultimate Cut, so you probably shouldn't watch it if it offends your sensibilities...

And yes, I, Claudius is superb, but it's quite a different take that doesn't mean any other way of doing it is bad. If that's your cup of tea, I'd also suggest The Caesars (1968), which doesn't hit the heights of I, Claudius but is still a pretty good old skool TV production. The movie has it's faults, and it doesn't quite manage to pull it off even before you get into the madness of certain people trying to turn it into another type of movie. It is not, however, garbage. Hell, even if it was, who are you, the good taste police? I don't know why you're posting in this thread, other than to troll it. Last edited by oddbox83; 05-04-2024 at 06:52 PM. |
