I’ve imported quite a few US releases in recent months (some Vinegar Syndrome, plenty of Kino Lorber UHDs, anime that’s not available here) and had no scratches on any of the discs, which lead me to think I was worrying over an issue that has been grossly overinflated.

Same, nearly 50% of my collection is US imports, and never a scratch on any Shout, Kino or Criterion disc, or playback problems from those labels. So I think they're exaggerated for effect. The paranoia does set in though and I double check every disc for any scratches or playback problems.

I have had 2 criterions that were pretty badly scratched and had dust/dirt on from new (War and Peace and Bringing up Baby). These were wrapped well and no loose discs on arrival so had to have happened in the factory. W&P both discs were grubby but only the second disc refuses to play properly (I have been able to backup the disc to PC and play Ok, just can't watch directly).
The only other scratched import I had was from Amazon US. Ordered the 3 4k Dollars Trilogy films, came in brown paper bag. 2 were fine, but the Few Dollars More 4k disc had popped off the spindle while in transit and was scratched so badly I couldn't read or backup the disc, so back it had to go.

Had two scratched discs in the last 2 months both new Warner Archive DVD releases via Amazon.com. One disc suffered because it was loose and the other looked suspiciously like it was repackaged (wasn't loose but scratched on both sides).
