How large of an upgrade would you say the 4K is compared to the Shout Blu Ray? |

To my eyes, the depth and clarity in this film, the dark sequences and the level of detail retained in this 4K version is really rather impressive. When I watched the first Shout release which I had before, while it was better I was never astounded with it as I am with this; this 4K looks like film for the first time to me.
The HDR is also rendering those red and orange colors of the cinematography beautifully, and the blacks which is an essential element here never crush while retaining some nice good detail. The creepy atmosphere is perfectly captured with this UHD and I can safely say, for me anyway, that this is the definitive version you should be watching moving forward. I think this package is a home run from Shout and absolutely worth upgrading. |

Pretty significant—enough that upgrading is worth it, especially if you're a fan of the film. I agree with the other posts above about the depth and clarity on the new transfer. I think in general the new scan has a much more rawer look to it—everything from the skin tones to the shadows and colors of the interior of the house look much bolder and more natural. The older Blu-ray transfer had a more orangey/brown hue that is toned down significantly on the 4K, and for the better. I think it works in the film's favor. I popped in the Blu-ray just to do a quick comparison last night and it confirmed my first impression of watching the 4K. I have seen this film many, many times, and it did in a way almost feel like I was seeing a different movie.

I really do hope a 4K of Prey at Night is coming out next year so it can join this film & Chapter 1 in the video format.

![]() ![]() Holy cow, this 4K disc looks good. The black levels and darkness look notably on point. The Strangers is probably the most genuinely scary movie of the new millennium. A lot of horror movies are gory, a lot of horror movies are fun, a lot of horror movies are witty, and a lot of horror movies are cleverly metaphorical, but few horror movies actually scary. I loved this film at the theater in 2008, and I have revisited it a good many times. This 4K UHD Blu-ray upgrade is a joy to watch. |

I think this movie is criminally underrated. Watched it this past weekend. Definitely a slow burn. Some of the characters decisions are baffling, but that's expected in a horror flick.
I really hope Prey At Night is next. That's in my top 10 favorite horror flicks ever. |

Agree with the posts saying it was genuinely 'scary' to them. This is one of the only movies I have seen in the theater as an adult that had me uneasy and tense pretty much the entire film. I still haven't revisited the film since then as that theatrical viewing was so strong.
As a little kid, the IT miniseries and Unsolved Mysteries regularly gave me nightmares. It's obviously much rarer to be spooked by a movie as you get older but this movie sure tries. Definitely extremely tense and a good surround sound system plus a dark room really makes it even more grim. Last edited by meremortal; 01-14-2025 at 06:35 PM. |

The perfect storm of Shout's scratched discs, and Amazon's shitty packing I would guess.

Not sure, but it's tough to "review" movies without spoiling them. I also doubt many people even read that section and instead just go straight to the a/v opinions. Movie trailers have also gotten much worse over the years and give too much away.

I was watching a show called Very Scary People (the Charles Manson segment) and when they showed one of Manson’s main killers, Tex Watson, I couldn’t believe how similar his eyes were to Kip Weeks (the man in the mask). Such an intense gaze which I’ve always found unsettling. There were a lot of similarities in the way the killers stalked the houses, the randomness of it, which just ads a realism to this movie.
