Everyone's so ****ing predictable, but we've all got our own schtick. You'd think I'd be tired of it after 15 soul-sucking years on this forum, and the last 13 months have definitely made me question spending so much time on such a frivolous pursuit, but I can't unlearn what I've learned (and still make some occasional coin from QC'ing) and in the end it keeps me sane - even the troublemakers, cranks, socks, serial incompetents and gentleman trollers.

The night sequences are definitely inaccurate and the egregious use of DNR is inexcusable, although I'm not sure if the framing is "incorrect" at all.

Filmcolors has scans of three dye-transfer prints, and back when the remastered Blu-ray came out I did some screenshot comparisons between 1.85:1 extractions from those print scans (how the image was meant to be projected) and the Blu-rays. IIRC, the few 1.85:1 extractions from the prints that I compared basically lined up with the remaster or had slightly less image area than it (the remaster was opened up to 1.78:1).

Older home video masters will typically show more image area than what was intended to be shown, so it shouldn't be a cause for concern if a modern master shows less image area than an older Blu-ray or DVD master. I believe Paramount are using SMPTE framing charts for most of their remasters now so in most cases the tighter framing is going to be more accurate even if tops of heads or parts of insignificant background items aren't fully in the frame in certain instances.

What if...the 4K actually has a good transfer and they don't want to look like idiots by having that disastrous PP BD in there? Nah, who am I kidding
That was actually my first thought, but then quickly dismissed it

Dial M for Murder should not get an UHD any more than Jaws 3 did.

Has anyone looked at how the 4K transfer of White Christmas looks in ITunes? Random question, but I'm curious.

Hmm. I still say that some(maybe not all) of the comparisons I’ve seen look super tight. Though if Paramount somehow fixed the DNR and the night scenes I would definitely want to pick up this disc.

That’s what I’m praying for, that they quietly release a fixed 4K disc and just not say anything about the previous release. But i don’t wanna get my hopes up lol

It upgraded to 4K?? I had no idea. I've had it on iTunes for ages.

I'll check it out tonight.

What if it's the fixed 4K restoration but with bloody awful encode?

Honestly, I have no problem with them releasing these 3-D films on 4K, as there's nothing wrong with oversampling. Dial M for Murder, Friday the 13th Part 3, Amityville 3-D, etc. Bring it on.

I wouldn't even have an issue with them releasing a UHD of a movie like Hell Night, where the OCN has been lost for decades and they were only left with theatrical prints. Let's preserve those prints in the highest possible quality. I say let's go, scan 'em in 4K!

It's just that with Jaws 3, Universal saw fit to blast it with (poor) AI upscaling. Hope that's not a trend that continues if other labels start putting these 3-D movies out in 4K. Or if they do, I just hope they do a much better job at it.

Yeah.. the gal who is still (somehow) at work at Paramount restoring the movies still stands by the mess that was done with this, as she tried to defend it back then.. and the 4K digital is still the same mess.. yeah I'm not expecting a miracle. They're not gonna suddenly pull out of nowhere a fixed master for our sake just for the disc. No, not this one. Not Paramount. Not with the current one on board with the typical big executive pride.

I read that James Cameron, Peter Jackson and George Lucas are overseeing the restoration for this 4K UHD.

We are getting a VistaVision Hitchcock showdown

Warner vs Paramount:

North by Northwest vs To Catch a Thief

But we already know that Paramount is gonna fail big time

In the U.S., Warner will fail on their packaging (Artwrk will suck and no steelbook choice) for NBNW and Paramount will fail on the PQ as they already have.
