Even just from a booklet perspective, I'd rather have them all separated with their individual artworks, rather than everything grouped together in one oversized book. Movies like Repo Man went through a lot of effort to make each of its pages feel special.

The set does omit some of Criterion's heaviest hitters over the years:
Kurosawa Pasolini Scorsese Lynch Abbas Kiarostami Wes Anderson Cronenberg Fassbinder Charlie Chaplin Gilliam Even with some of the major directors in the set, like Godard, and Tarkovsky, it wasn't their most popular choice chosen. I can't imagine more people chose Weekend over Breathless, or Mirror over Solaris for instance. Last edited by MifuneFan; 08-08-2024 at 10:51 PM. |

Criterion has become obsessed with themselves, thinking that they and their name sells product. To me, the films are the product and many of these don’t interest me.

as a longtime loyalist, it will still be cheaper to individually buy the 15 titles from this set which i don't already own |

I actually got excited for this until another member posted about the discs probably being in hard to remove slip sleeves and the fact that owning each in the original packaging would be better…then I felt silly, and have to agree as well as having some of the titles…but now reading these posts of several members having most or all of them already and me having almost mostly none of them…Ive purchased a total of 43 Criterions with a small list of more that I intend to pick up that I missed. But really on second thought, who does indeed want to skip out on the individual booklets and individually numbered and nicely made packaging? I still want the outer Box for some reason that I can’t explain.

I would’ve preferred a Godzilla Heisei 4K box set, a Kurosawa 4K box set, or both.

Going out on a limb and predict they're doing a Kurosawa set soonish if they didn't include anything of his in this.
This is a strange set, but if they can sell out of that Janus box, there's probably enough people to get this expensive Christmas gift. I would have been happy with just a coffee table book that collected stuff like essays from long-OOP editions on laserdisc and DVD, interviews with their team, behind-the-scenes stuff, etc. Maybe even include a Blu-ray with odds and ends. |
