I am tempted to buy this rather interesting curiosity. If it was a cookery show presented by Donald Pleasence, Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee then I would pre-order it without hesitation. If I do buy it, I will let you know if I can or cannot get past episode 3. Anyway, I hope this release sells well for the BFI. |

Aired on December 26, 1970 (BBC purchased the rights for it no later than April that year), well after the release of the album it took its name from not to mention the Bee Gees completely splitting up (to be more precise Barry dropped out before the album's release) and subsequent non-releases of Barry and Maurice Gibb's solo albums as well as Robin's follow-up to "Robin's Reign" before they re-united for "2 Years On" album.
Outside of an old, rare-as-h*ll home video release, the TV special has never had a wide physical release. It is doubtful if they'd be able to find a decent enough source to make it available now. Assets including unused footage (among them scenes with drummer Colin Petersen shot before being fired from the band) may have been held at the RSO library up until its closure and transferred to Polydor when they absorbed it and ultimately ending up with Universal. There is a small chance whatever, if anything, went along with their catalogue when the Gibb brothers gained access to it back in 2006. The expanded reissues that Rhino Records produced on behalf of Reprise Records ground to a screeching halt after the Odessa deluxe edition in 2009 and Barry has subsequently refused to allow anything other than what appeared on the original albums to be reissued (and even that leaves a lot to be desired). Barry has a lot of issues regarding this period of the Bee Gees' career and refused to even give interviews for the booklet of Odessa deluxe edition set ("treat it as if we're dead"). Add to that the fact that it's a not so well received tv special that only grabs the attention of some hardcore fans and a record company that only cares to pick the cherries from the Bee Gees cake and you have zero interest from the concerned parties. Shame that it's missing, that brief clip was entertaining.

feels a little too niche for a US release (plus the hurdle of standards conversion with PAL framerate), but after Comic Strip Presents and Sherlock Holmes I could see Severin handling it

Severin would of course deinterlace and slow down to 24p, rather than the more sensible approach of a 60i conversion which would preserve the smooth video look and speed if not frame rate.

Well that's good news. Should work on all sets then.
Assuming that I'm understanding that right, that means playing the disc on a 4:3 CRT set via a playstation3 would then mean that it's perfectly playable without having to worry about it being pillarboxed. IMO every time a company releases something upscaled on BD they should do this. |

Thank you for posting the video clip here, it has saved me £17 and 15mm or so of shelf space. I really like obscure/niche vintage TV and supporting the likes of the BFI, but I won't be buying this. However, this should also be released in the US for all the Vincent Price fans there. Last edited by Number 28; 11-20-2024 at 12:07 PM. |
