I generally do too, though it's funny that Martin bemoans at the outset the response his article got. Shit stirring on a thread is one thing but he spends a whole paragraph in his published article naming swathes of people and classifying them into good, bad, useless, shithouse, etc etc. As I said though, funny stuff.

Just watched The Exterminating Angel, fantastic restoration work! That being said it is still presented in the wrong aspect ratio. It has been mentioned elsewhere and I've long suspected that the academy ratio presented on most home video releases is just plain wrong. The insane amounts of space above people's heads just doesn't make sense from a compositional standpoint, there's a boom mic visible in one scene, and most telling of all the credit sequence absolutely looks formatted for a much different aspect ratio. If your player has a way to zoom the image I highly recommend going for ~1.66:1 (even though I suspect it should be 1.85:1). I know it sounds insane to essentially pan and scan a brand new 4K restoration but give it a shot, can't see myself ever watching it in 1.33:1 again

It's the same with some of the Mexican horrors they have released. And the subs get cropped off if I zoom in.

Can anyone advise if any modern HDTVs have a 1.66:1 option?

Considering it was the European widescreen ratio from 50+ years ago my guess would be no. Some blu-ray players allow you to change size/ position of subtitles which may be of help to you, panasonic does for sure.

Just watched Simon of The Desert yesterday, same situation. Image composition looks much better in 1.66:1

Now for sale at 30 GBP (with voucher) at amazon.co.uk. Is that the lowest price so far, or have there been other sales that I'm not aware of?
