I finally saw this after doing a blind buy. I loved the 2002 version, but I have never read the book.

I was surprised to see how different the 2 movies were which leads me to my biggest question to those who have read the book, which version is closer to the source material without spoiling the source/book?

I do plan on reading the book shortly, but wanted to watch this new version first before doing so. I have a feeling this new movie is probably closer to the source, but I do have some issues in the storytelling in this version.

Also, I preferred the 2002 handling of the the time in prison with the priest.

This version is much closer to the book. I watched the 2002 version after reading the book a couple of years ago and didn’t enjoy it. The book is my all time favourite.

Thanks for the information. I had a feeling that was the case. Looking forward to reading the book now so I can fill in the gaps left by the movie.

Also worth checking out the 1934 version which is considered one of the best film versions.

Like many of you, I loved the 2002 version and have seen it many times.

I missed hearing about this until recently after stumbling across it on a plane. It makes the 2002 version feel like a popcorn movie in comparison, this one is absolutely stunning - a real epic, with well-developed supporting characters and more dramatic tone throughout. Fantastic all around and didn't even notice it was 3 hours long.

But agree with Brett_B, the one thing I thought was better in the 2002 version was the time in prison.

Sad to see no 4K disc plans yet for the US, gonna have to get the blu-ray for now

I still love the Hanna Barbera version - I've had the tape since I was 7.
