Default I liked it

I really liked this movie and I'm importing the UK 4K release of it because I think it would be cool to own

I'm going in blind on the basis that this looks much more like a legit horror entry than a typical gag rinse-wipe-repeat superhero comic-book rehash. The uhd is now inbound, and I'm looking forward to seeing where i land with it, as well. I've never watched the first two, but this one looks more like my cup of tea.

I think you'll like it. I adore del Toro's two Hellboy films. I always will. This was an improvement on the last one in 2029 that he did not do, but I still ordered that one because I am a filthy completionist.

As far as Hellboy films go this is the closest in tone to the supernatural feel Mignola created in the comics IMO. If you’re someone who can appreciate subtleties over spectacle and horror over action there’s lots to like here. Compared to the other Hellboy films it’s just on a smaller scale and I disagree with the criticism that it felt cheap as a result. What it lacks in grandiose set pieces it makes up for in atmosphere. Personally I’d rather see a continuation of this version of Hellboy as opposed to a third Del Toro film and I am a huge fan of those. I like how it just drops you into the adventure. No setup, no pointless origin, you’re just along for the ride like it’s a day in the life of a B.P.R.D. Agent. That said I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s better or even on par with Del Toro’s films it’s just more authentic feeling to me and I really like it. I was very impressed with the 4K presentation.

I treated this as a stand-alone horror film, and with no background and no experience with the comic book series or any of the prior films, I enjoyed it well enough purely on its own merits. I agree with the positive comments about copious atmosphere and clever, conservative use of the budget to create a claustrophobic, creepy, bleak environment that works well for the material and feels effective moreso than overly frugal. I'm glad I took a gamble on this title and scooped the 4k. I do hope to see another film continuing in this same vein.
