The first one had a crackerjack script with a great central conflict of the family cop with everything to live for paired with the cop with nothing to live for. Two became a looney tunes movie where they occasionally went off script and that great conflict was gone. But the chemistry worked. Three they mostly went off script but the addition of Rene Russo kept it a little fresh, but only a little. The fourth one they either didn't finish the script or just completely ignored it altogether -- and it was a big ol' mess and very stale by that point. It was a prime example of why writers are so very necessary.

I want to watch Lethal Weapon 2 in 4K DV! Seeing Patsy Kensit in 4K DV would be an added bonus!

Yep. These are DVDs that I've kept around.

While I agree with your preferences (ie. the first one being the best), I think that all of the Lethal Weapon are good .

I have to agree. All 4 are good with the first two being the best.

Ridiculous not to release the sequels which were blockbuster hits.

Yep one of the few franchises that stayed consistently good IMO. Sure some are better than others, and yes the first is my favorite, but it’s one of those I can tune in to any entry in this series regardless of which one it is. It’s just damn fun!

Watched this last night and it's probably the least I've enjoyed it since I first saw it. Tonally, it's just so different from the other 3. I dunno, it's always been my least favorite but it gets harder to watch the older I get.

That final fight is just downright idiotic.

Ha, all opinions allowed!

I also watched it last night (I always watch 1&2 every Christmas, #2 this evening) & thoroughly enjoyed it (as always). I think the Blu-ray looks terrific & the 4K will have to go some to improve on it. Anyway, it'll be a 4K view next Christmas.

I watched it last night with the wife, who had never seen it. Still a terrific film and a holiday staple. The chemistry between Gibson and Glover is always so infectious and the film just works on an instinctual level. There are certainly logic gaps, but I don't care because emotionally it's so coherent and moving. I still get worked up a bit during Gibson's more vulnerable moments.

This is rather extreme—I watched it on Saturday and it’s still great and the ending fight is ‘80s over-the-top perfection, with some quality “Riggs exorcising his personal demons” pathos running beneath the ass-kickery surface. Where I agree with you is that it’s the weakest of the series. I’m seemingly the one person on the planet who feels the series improves with each new installment, as the comedy becomes more ingrained and the relationship between the two leads deepens.

I loves them all, but the first one is deffo more of A Serious Film™️ compared to the rest. Me and the GF watched them all again recently and we were both quoting lines all the way through them.

I’m the complete opposite. I LOVE the original, but the sequels really don’t do anything for me. I’m more a fan of the crazy and unhinged Riggs with a death wish.

The difference with the sequels is the relationship of Riggs and Murtaugh is firmly in place and it’s just them continuing to play off each other but still share a mutual respect and friendship with each other. They annoy each other but both know they need each other. They’re fight on Roger’s boat in part three shows how much Murtaugh’s friendship and his family greatly turned Riggs’ life around.

The original is unique in being able to see where they were at before the other entered their lives. Murtaugh was your typical conservative family man who did things by the book while Riggs was the more unorthodox cop who wasn’t afraid to put his life on the line. Much of the films magic was build around how these two had to cope with each other but gradually come to accept and adjust with the others influence. It’s just like comparing Toy Story 1 to the sequels. That bitter rivalry between Buzz and Woody is long gone in the sequels and they fully accept each other as part of Andy’s toy ensemble. The original dealt heavily in them accepting and adjusting to the others presence and what the true meaning of their union serves.
