I mean, Dune ain't winning cinematography either, it's almost certainly going to The Brutalist.

Can't judge a film I haven't seen yet and unfortunately it hasn't released anywhere near me. Beyond excited to watch it though.

You may be right, especially given the bias against the horror genre, i.e., there are many Academy members who won't even watch this film. Plus there's the fact that although Lol Crawley hasn't completed many high profile films, has done more work outside of his relationship with Brady Corbet. On the other hand, Jarin Blaschke really hasn't made many seen films outside of his work with Robert Eggers, even though all four are bangers from a camera perspective.

That said, I screened The Brutalist last week in 70MM and while there were a number of really wonderful framed shots and related scenes, I'm not sure I would place it above Greig Fraser's work for Dune Part 2. That film I screened in IMAX 70MM film and it was so spectacular I had to see again in that format, at Lincoln Square no less.

In my opinion Nosferatu is on another level entirely, for the manner in which it was lit to accentuate, not dim, the darkness. Just as importantly, in the way the camera frames the narrative inline with the viewers POV and is so tightly integrated with the director's intent.

For this reason, I would give Jarin the nod.

But it's super close, and all three films and related cinematographers are certainly deserving of the award.

Greig Fraser already won for Part 1, even without The Brutalist being a contender I just don't see the Academy awarding him another one for similar work. It's how these things play out.

Absolutely, but simply because the Academy won't give Fraser another award even though his work for Dune Part 2 is superior to his work for Part 1 doesn't necessarily elevate Lol Crawley's work for The Brutalist to result in the most deserving.

The Brutalist is coming out at the right time to build the type of buzz which is required to secure a nom, especially after 30 sold out shows in NYC and LA, but where it goes from here is anyone's guess once a larger audience is exposed to the film hand in hand with the resulting box office.

But I do agree given the subject matter of The Brutalist and the VistaVision pedigree it has a leg up with the Academy.

Saw it day after Christmas was impressed. Nice to see a horror movie that doesn't rely on gore, jump scares, or shock value to be interesting. Story carries through along with some great visuals. Hope this gets a steelbook.

Got to see this with my girl yesterday and we both loved it. Now, granted, this is my first Eggers film and I've also never seen another version of Nosferatu other than the original silent film (some time ago), but this was all-around magnificent; The cast, the sets, the language, costumes, cinematography...everything was just so on-point. I'm really not sure I will buy a physical copy, but I would undoubtedly wish to see this once more.

I'm expecting a nice rigid box set from Second Sight since they've already done two for Eggers titles. Don't know if I'm willing to wait the expected 1-2 years for it, though.

Was this shot in 1.66:1 Aspect Ratio? My theater had black side bars.

Grab the first edition now and then the Second Sight one (assuming we'd get one, I'd love it if we did!) later.

Yes, my theater had the black side bars as well. Interestingly, on this site the listing for the forthcoming 4K from Universal says it’s going to be 1.85:1.

The Witch is very good. Myself have only seen the silent one and this one.

I'm surprised Eggers didn't shoot this in 1.37:1 and in B&W. Or windowboxed lol. Would've been appropriate I think. Not very cinematic for today's wide screens, but appropriate.

I will wait. (Or rather I'll buy everything else released first, and then go back to buy several copies of the SS release... )

I saw this in 35mm last night and it was in 1.66:1. Lovely presentation, too
