Even if a film seems like it'd be a long venture, it's about the experience of the film itself that matters most. Sure, I watched Oppenheimer in 70mm too but the film was such a breeze-through that that time just flew by, and the same rung true when I watched the 4K disc at home. Hell, I thought Killers of the Flower Moon (which runs at a similar runtime as The Brutalist) utilized its time well too, and that one didn't have an intermission you can pause at. Film and art shouldn't be dictated simply by its running time, and you'll have to learn that. If you want, you can treat the film with its intermission as a double-feature instead of a long movie. It's also a pretty common length for stage productions and musicals, so this isn't anything new. It's not even as long as The Ten Commandments. I'd say give it a shot at the cinema first before complaining about its length after buying the 4K disc. And if you get overwhelmed by the situation, then it's okay to just leave the movie theater and try again some other time. Don't let it be a burden. I mean it. ![]() |

And no I can't just chance it. I can kind of push myself with a movie over 2 hours, but I HAVE TO get up once or twice to walk around (usually head to the bathroom to walk a while and stretch), we go to matinees where I can stand up if I need to, which I have done in most of them when no one else is in the theater behind us, and I always sit on the aisle so I can stretch my hips and legs and back. I can't sit for more than 30mins without getting up or moving around a LOT. I have an autoimmune inflammatory arthritis (among other things) which makes me VERY VERY stiff and in severe pain, especially in theater seats, and it makes me suffer from hypersomnia (which means I fall asleep (I've fallen asleep at every single movie I've seen in the theater for the last 10 years, no matter the length, and even rock concerts, and gigs when I go to see my husband's band!) similar to narcolepsy.) I REALLY struggle to stay awake during movies even at home, all day not just the later evening, we pause and rewind a lot! haha It's super frustrating because I had to get up during Nosferatu and since there were more people there I just left and went to the bathroom to stretch, came back in so much pain then fell asleep for 10-15mins missing even more of the movie! At home we can pause for me to do that. |

I have to say, this may be the best film I've seen in a long, long time. This may be the best (new) film I've in the last 20 years, and a film that I can honestly say may be in the top 20 or 30 films I've ever seen. For 3 hours and 35 minutes, I felt such a range of emotions, and could just feel the greatness as I watched it, not after I've seen it and thought about it. I honestly never even heard of this film until about a week ago. I watched the trailers on Friday, and immediately bought a ticket for Saturday, and now on Sunday, am truly feeling the obsession washing over me.
The only thing about this that is kind of funny, is that it takes place in Philadelphia and Doylestown, PA, and I live in Bucks County PA pretty much in between the two locations. During the intermission, everyone in the audience (including myself) were looking up filming locations. I think everyone was wondering why they've never seen this community center anywhere in Doylestown, not realizing this isn't a bio-pic, and is completely made up! I was kind of disappointed that this wasn't shot in PA, or even America. I kind of shook my head when his wife arrived in "Philadelphia" in a Hungarian train! Yeah, I'm a train geek from Philly, that stuck out like a sore thumb! Even with that little distraction, this is absolute classical filmmaking that few younger filmmakers are keeping alive, and deserves to be in the pantheon of films such as The Godfather, Once Upon A Time In America, and There Will Be Blood. |

I just turned 50 and if I didn't drink anything for 48 hours prior I still don't think I could go 3.5 hours without having to pee at least five times.

All copies of the film include the intermission, if abbreviated. It is approximately 105-110m in, basically exactly half in, though.

Saw it in IMAX last night. What a phenomenal film!
To all the morons complaining about the runtime. Think of it like this: You watch a 99-minute movie. Take a break for 15 minutes. Then, you watch another 99-minute movie sequel. It's not that long (nor does it feel long.) I don't care if you have the best home setup in the world... if you do NOT see this in IMAX, you are doing yourself a MASSIVE disservice. You did not see the movie. Last edited by ScottSullivanTV; 01-27-2025 at 01:14 AM. |

Who are you exactly to tell people something like that? What if someone doesn't have an IMAX in their city? Or even in the entire country?

Yeah, I was asking in general, not you specifically (despite quoting the post). This started off as a thread for the Canadian 4K, so I quoted the UK post because it felt relevant.
