Right. If you can see 721p to 1079p from your position, then you have increasing benefit from 1080p, without the full benefit.

There are certainly some people that won't get any benefit from 1080p. But, they are probably in the minority for big screens. So, I don't know why there is any debate, except from those trying to convince themselves they made the right choice going 720p.

For some character types, they must argue they were PERFECTLY right, and everyone else are idiots for considering something else.

I got LCD ... therefore plasma is a waste of money
I got HD DVD ... therefore Blu-ray is a waste of money
I got 720p ... therefore 1080p is a waste of money

Here is a good chart to use to determine if 1080p is right for you or if you only need 720p.

Resolution Chart

Granted there's always the placebo effect (and bragging rights) of thinking you're 1080p tv is better than a 720p at your viewing distance and screen size in order to justify your purchase. But when the human eye isn't physically capable of differentiating between the two based upon your screen size and viewing distance, there's really no point in spending the extra couple hundred/thousand dollars unless you want to impress people with your numbers.

Numerous unbiased sources that look at it from a scientific angle can easily be found with a google search of "1080p vs 720p" along with phrases like "does it matter" "can i tell the difference" "which one is right for me."

HAHA so your saying spend more for something that you won't be able to tell the difference between the more expensive one and the cheaper one??? HAHA wow that makes a lot of sense and isn't a total waste of money lol

I can't believe all the people on this site that can't believe that 720p can look just as good as 1080p when the viewing distance/screen size are far away or small lol People who can't believe that are pretty set in their ways which will cost them a lot more for something that won't make a difference!!! Lol you guys are funny

I find it funny that posts like this ALWAYS come from someone with a 720P display. I have NEVER read a post where someone has said that they have a 1080P and their friends 720P looks just as good or is not a noticeable difference

PBJ my friend has a 1080p Sony and he told me he can't tell the difference between my tv and his unless he is closer to it...but from where he sits he said "man I should of got a 720p tv!" So when I have seen a 1080p and my tv with the same movie in and I can't tell the difference, well then I can say 1080p isn't always better!!! And I think it is funny that people who have a 1080p set think it is impossible for a 720p tv to be as good as there in certain cases!!!

Is a black and white TV as good as color if you sit far enough away?

I have a 1080p 52 sony bravia and a 1080i 52 sony wega and i can't tell the difference. no more detail on the 1080p than the 1080i just a bit smoother picture but the extra 900 dollars i paid for it wasn't for smoothness. i feel like such a schmuck still. 1080=1080 no matter what. and i think people with 1080p feel too dumb (such as i) to admit it. that people with 720p enjoy theirs just as much and get just as much out of it than we 1080p people. 720p looks greater than 480 no debate. if 1080p was really so great there wouldn't be a debate 1080p>720p it would be there in black and white for all to see instead of how far you sit from the screen garbage. of course if you sit 20 feet away you lose detail because you can only see so far as opposed to being on top of it that goes for anything. if you look at lets say a cup on a table from 10 ft away you see the cup the color etc etc now go pick up the cup and shove it in your face you see textures, maybe a crack you couldn't see before from 10 ft away. that goes with any resolution. but 1080p is bullshit and if it wasn't the difference would be there no matter what which it isn't because you need to make excuses about the screen size and where one plops his fat ass to watch a bluray.

OH for sure, if you take two 12" sets one color the other black & white, and sit about 1420 ft. away you wont be able to tell the difference.

Cool

Sorry, we are to busy arguing how 7.1 is better than 5.1 and how the S300 decodes TrueHD.

It also depends on the source. Even on a 1080p TV, when watching HD TV some stations only broadcast in 720p so I would not see any difference on a 720p TV or a 1080p TV. However I do notice a big difference watching Lost on broadcast (ABC) 720 v/s 1080p Blu Ray (but that can also be compression).

You may be right, unless you have a larger TV, you may not notice the difference. I have a 52inch 1080p and I am happy with it.

viewing distance and screen size are the only main concerns between 720p and 1080p.
and yes, i did notice a huge difference in details when i moved from 9' viewing distance to 6'

I own a 42" Philips 1080p LCD.

720p may work well for some. But not for others. instead of people arguing which is better. why cant we just decide for ourselves and purchase what WE want. **** what the other people think.

I don't know anything about sound but I do know 1080p is a gimmick to get dumbasses like myself to spend an extra 900 dollars.

I live in a smaller room and I'm on a budget. I got a Sammy 3242 @ 720p. 720p looks great for the screen size and viewing distance. If I had a larger TV which I want one day when I'm not limited to a budget, I would invest the extra in 1080p. I do see a difference in larger TV's but it wouldn't make a difference in mine.
