Very limited 3D release in Australia overall, a screen or two in QLD and Sydney from what I can find, shame.

Got really lucky to attend an advance screening ahead of the release date - even more, it was a 3D showing. Zoe Saldana has a little special intro for this specific screening, and it was really nice to see the "real" her before enjoying the movie (she plays Elio's aunt).

I was not prepared to be floored by the movie like I was, it probably worked really well for me because like Elio, I was totally into things like astronomy and space exploration when I was a kid - and, admittedly, I also used to watch that old Carl Sagan PBS show over and over, it never really got old for me.

Also - growing up without parents is something I can totally relate to. The way Elio's life is shown in the movie definitely rings very true - and I know all too well how isolated you can feel at times.

So, in the end, despite the obvious familiarity with any number of alien-related movies, this ended up working for me way better than I expected it too - the fantastic element is obviously mostly cute, but the sentimental aspect absolutely rings true.

The 3D is first-rate, with lots of depth and more than enough poppets, and it's a shame that (at least in the US) there aren't any 3D Dolby or 3D IMAX showings.

I think Luca was the last Pixar movie I watched, in 2D on my phone. I did enjoy it as I am sure I would enjoy this but since they abandoned 3D Blu-ray I just have no interest in paying to see their films in the cinema and I am not buying an Apple Vision Pro. As a result, their films may as well not exist as far as I am concerned. Back when they supported 3D Blu-ray I used to buy every single one on release! Now they get none of my money. Good job Disney!

Hasn't every studio done the same thing at this point?

Superman almost certainly won't get a 3D blu-ray either.

Im the opposite. The less likely a film is to receive a blu the more likely i am to go to the cinema. Elio and Superman are must sees, the latter in imax especially. Dragon and rebirth are less of a priority because a disc is likely.

That's right, I won't be buying Superman either if my only options are 2D discs but I will at least watch it.

When it comes to animated movies though, they are close to the bottom of my watch list if they are made for kids and in 2D.

This isn't getting universally good reviews:

Do most movies get "universally good reviews"?

85% score on RT is pretty good, actually, for a family movie.

Inside Out 2 got pretty much universally good reviews.

We're talking about a difference of about 5% between the two movies when it comes to the RT scores. Do you think kids are going to care whether a movie got 85% or 91% on Rotten Tomatoes?

Also, some people like watching original animated movies, once in a while? We are already getting tons of animated sequels in the years ahead.

This movie was an absolute blast, imho, with some really amazing 3D.

I also watched it in Dolby Cinema, and I'm watching it again this weekend.

We rented Borderlands last night (2004, 2D) and thought it was a riot. Looked it up on RT afterwards and it had a 10% critics score … universally panned by pretty much everyone. Only mention this because my experience can be the same with reviews here or elsewhere. They’re fun to read, but sometimes don’t reflect my experience in the slightest.

I mean, you're not wrong there.

For me, this movie had special meaning because like Elio, I also have always been a bit of a science geek and also grew up watching the Carl Sagan show. This movie really made me feel like, you know, seen.

And I absolutely adored it for that!

Not only that, it is the ONLY animated movie released so far this year in 3D. And I do go to the theater to watch every animated movie that comes out. Neither Dog Man nor Sneaks were released in 3D IIRC.

Also, this is from Collider:
Quote:
In a remarkable achievement, Pixar's Elio opened with an A grade on CinemaScore, maintaining a record that hasn't been broken in the legendary animation house's three-decade history. No Pixar movie has earned a CinemaScore grade below A-, and most of them have received critical acclaim. Some of them have also won Oscars.

Elio's A CinemaScore puts it in the same bracket as past Pixar movies such as Inside Out 2, Toy Story, A Bugs Life, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Brave, Monsters University, Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, Finding Dory, Cars 3, Toy Story 4, and Elemental. It's the 16th Pixar movie to score an A grade

So is Elio. One YouTuber doesn’t swing the needle much.

So many opportunities for Disney make money with their 3D animated movies on blu-ray... I can't wait for their deal with apple to run off and they start to release them on physical media.

I saw Elio in 3D on Friday and I loved it. There is one particular 'in-your-face' 3D scene that's out of this world. It'll wow 3D geeks. The 3D was quite good. Can't wait to own this on physical media.

Disney stopped releasing 3D Blu-rays long before they did a deal with Apple. They could start releasing them again if they wanted to, they just don't want to.

Unfortunately there will be no physical media release of the 3D version, Disney doesn't want you (or me, or anyone) to own it.
