That’s because a video game is not a TV show, and vice versa.

In the game’s world, the player will find “artifacts” that are basically supporting characters’ notes and journals, and many of them have been expanded into supporting characters’ backstory in both seasons, not just Bill’s story.

Assuming they could have adapted Bill’s section as is into the TV show, you still have to show his backstory with Frank. Video games don’t have effective ways to tell supporting characters’ backstory because it’s a game, it should always be about the playable character, no one wants to see an endless cutscene about a supporting character.

It’s the same reason why as much as people think Ellie’s storyline in Seattle in Season 2 should be as long as it seemed in the game, they can’t just make the whole season about Ellie shooting people and Zombies in Seattle. Video games progress like a to-do list; but a story told like that would be boring, hence it’s been hard to produce good movies and TV shows based on video games.

They could've made Ellie's story as long as they wanted and added anything they felt like. Neil Druckmann takes all the liberties in the world when he feels like it. He had no problem taking Bill, a minor character whose story was basically a footnote in the game, and giving him an entire episode just because he felt like it. But, as soon as people say we should've gotten a longer season 2 with Ellie, it's "We can't just do that". LOL.

That said, I think they've already done a good enough job making season 2 boring. It's a lot of Ellie and Dina walking around, being loud, and making dumb decisions the entire time. I don't know how they're going to pull off a season 3. But, judging from the ratings and viewership drop throughout season 2, it'll be a hell of a fun dumpster fire to watch unfold.

And the best part is we're going to have to wait 2 years to get, probably, 7 more episodes. LOL.

The funny thing is, I can picture a version of this conversation that probably wouldn't make people cringe in that way, but it would take some back-and-forth, but it could work.

Ellie: So... you and Jesse are having a baby. It was Jesse, right?
Dina: (looks judgmentally at her)
Ellie: Does he know?
Dina: I don't know how to tell him. I-I don't even know if I should. We're in our own places right now. He has Jackson, he's an important guy. I have you. You want to be in this baby's life?
Ellie: No. That's crazy! Like a... mom?
Dina: Well, I'm its mom, silly. But, yeah.
Ellie: Holy shit... I'm gonna be a dad!
Dina: (snickers) I don't think that's how it works.
Ellie: (giggling) No, no it doesn't.

Then the radio chatter starts.

This is why direction is important though, because if you read those words like it's dialogue from The Room, it's not going to sound so good. Create where the pauses, tonal changes, etc. go, and it can play itself without being the butt end of every meme from this season (that's not changing the proportions of Bella Ramsey's head).

EDIT: Sorry, I thought I was in the TV show thread.

Have you tried being a cannibal? Apparently it's much more appealing.

Pre-ordered the SteelBook! At that price, it may be a mistake as Season 1 was $43, and that was not a SteelBook. I hope Amazon honors it, however.

It's no longer possible to pre-order the SteelBook on Amazon.ca. And the price for the standard hasn't even dropped yet.

Bill is not a footnote lol. You play a large section of the game with him. Frank is maybe.

So... while skimming through Slowpoke Pics, I found something VERY interesting: what seems to be either direct captures (more likely) or rips of the KALEIDESCAPE version of episode 1! If you look up "kaleidescape" on the site you'll find comps for a bunch of other random movies and shows!

https://slow.pics/c/OrY8Z2dl (SDR cap comparisons)
https://slow.pics/c/uiDOdvMC (HDR plots)
https://slow.pics/c/fEUVphRm (in HDR)

Interesting. Would Kaleidoscape be indicative of the quality of the upcoming 4k release?

Most likely, yes. The K-scape version seemingly has much higher brightness in highlights than the HDR stream as you can see so I wonder if it'll be reflected in the disc release. However, I don't know if the higher brightness is a result of the rip/recording. I suspect it could be a screen recording of a Kaleidescape box simply because there's no Dolby Vision and one of the comparison caps on a This is The End comparison was snapped from an avi file of all things, a file format commonly used for uncompressed video capture.

The K-scape version looks very good! I'm not super surprised as Max tends to nerf the brightness on their HDR streams. I watched Evil Dead Rise on Max DV and could barely see anything. I watched the UHD and it was night-and-day. You'd think they'd have learned after that famous Game of Thrones episode, but no.
