Badly encoded in Kino’s usual "set and forget manner" like so many of their releases with pixelated highlights. I’d recommend you not to pay attention to the skies and you should be fine.

Now that people have the Eureka . Would someone please try and do a Kino 4k vs Eureka 4K of the sky or any part where I might notice this pixelating screen caps . I still have a chance to return my Kino before . I don't really care about the extras but now knowing about the bad encode , I will be looking for any problem and its probably going to take away my enjoyment of watching this film knowing the Eureka is out there . I still really don't want to pay more then double though . But if the Kino is distracting it will bug me . I also like to try and grab one while the Slipcover is still around as I missed the Kino . I really love that picture from the Kino slip .

It's never been one of my favourites but you could easily make the case for it being top 10 and many would put it there. I always preferred watching later and slightly lesser-known Gary Cooper Westerns such as The Hanging Tree and the quite brutal Man of the West.

Still, High Noon is a classic. I'm intending to get the Eureka shortly to replace my Blu-ray.

Got mine in today unexpectedly:

I have not watched this movie yet, so looking forward to watching it. Gary Cooper was one of my father's favourite actors, and he always mentioned this film. So at long last, I will be watching one of his favourite movies.

I wonder if eureka will release Shane on 4K? My father also loved that movie.

Every Kino disc looks good-to-great until you see almost any other label take a crack at the same title, then you can’t help but feel awash in all of Kino’s warts.

I almost never buy Kino anymore unless the chances of another label releasing the same film are slim to none. But to be honest, most of the time, I see people here complaining about a film looking terrible on a Kino 4K, and when I finally watch it I think it looks fine. It's still annoying not owning the best version available though, so until Kino gets their stuff together (probably never), I'm mostly done with them.

Kino has their issues for sure. But I really enjoy their sales, which is almost exclusively the only time I buy them. Those sales provide a great way to blind-buy other films.

Sadly, I am in Canada so with the currency exchange and shipping prices their sales aren't really worth it.

I hate the yellow cover!!! It bears no comparison to Cooper's appearance in this classic. At no point does Coop sport two guns.

Got the Eureka 4K today and did a comparison as promised.

1. Eureka BD. It seems the 4K restoration on that disc and the Olive Signature US release served as the basis for the HDR master Kino commissioned. There are the same traces of grain management in the opticals and the small number of shots from a lower quality source that were spliced in between the OCN footage. The SDR grayscale looks great though and after having compared everything, I would’ve preferred a 4K SDR release. The Eureka BD release wasn’t encoded by FiM and it shows. For those with the BD and an appreciation for optimal encoding, consider an upgrade.

2. Kino’s 4K. It seems that Kino commissioned the HDR/DV grade and some additional cosmetic work on the master. They used to mention "… brand new master by studio X" on their back covers when they were supplied with ready-made materials. This isn’t the case here but maybe someone’s in the know and things are different. The HDR grade is darker than the SDR one and flattened the grayscale quite significantly. I mentioned this in the Sabrina and Sunset Boulevard thread as well but I’m not really a fan of these grades and doubt that they’re enhancing the grayscales to make them appear more film-like. I’ve seen worse and it’s not the end of the world when the film is viewed in a dark environment but don’t expect anything as luminous and sparkly as The Big Heat. Kino’s encoding can be seen here via ko8ebryant’s caps: https://slow.pics/c/JbRj2HYU.

3. Eureka 4K (BD-100). Same 4K master and same HDR grade as on the Kino 4K but now expertly encoded. Thanks to no compression anomalies standing in the way, we can now scrutinize the master much better. In comparison with the SDR master, I noticed that there are opticals that got hit with further noise reduction and sometimes egregiously so, such as in the scene with Grace Kelly at the train station at roughly 18 minutes into the film. Parts of that scene were sourced from a lower-quality source. In the HDR master, grain was practically erased altogether whereas in the 4K SDR master on the Eureka BD, grain is visible in the same shot despite the iffy encoding.

I’d still recommend the Eureka 4K as the OCN shots and scenes are frequently gorgeous, beautifully detailed and at most only minimally tampered with. The imperfect HDR grade bugs me but I’ll still use Eureka’s 4K for my future viewings due to the FiM encode.

I know you said you still recommend the Eureka 4K, but your analysis actually convinced me not to upgrade from my Eureka BD.

Here you go. These are from the Eureka BD. In screenshot 2, the grain in the sky was even further managed when the HDR master was created.

Not double dipping on this as it seems it's not a huge upgrade over the Kino, but definitely will wait for a Shane 4k release from Eureka over the Kino.

For those who have got both this release and the standard Eureka 2K, can you fit both booklets in the case together?

Space is becoming an issue for me so if I upgraded I’d want to combine them
