When I did a comparison year or two ago the Plaion encode looked better.
Could be wrong and my recollection is foggy but that is my impression.

With that said, for fans of the SpiceDiver Edit the 30gb online version is an excellent upgrade over the original SD version and would will be sufficiently satisfactory without needing to hunt down the Plaion rerelease; as well it is vastly superior to any of the wonky fan AI upscales.

I actually did my own 1080p recreation of the Spicediver edit before they even started their remaster after the original Koch/Plaion release.

I got the edit finished apart from recreating the Spice eyes for all the shots that never had them.

I almost put in an editorial decision of my own towards the end because during the final scene in the grand hall, Paul descends the stairs and then looks upwards for beat or two. This shot has long felt as though there was intention for Paul to be looking at something specific.

When I was making my SpiceDiver remaster, I noticed the bull head mounted towards the ceiling of the hall in the reverse wide shot. I considered inserting a closeup of the bull head, but ultimately did not.

Afterwards, I read the shooting script and discovered that it includes an insert closeup shot of the bull head right where I was thinking.

And what version was it that they included again? So confusing with all the different versions. There's an "Alternative Edition Redux", but apparently there's also a 4k AI upscale (yuck) by Gabriel Wars.

That's why I don't care about the Imprint not including a fanedit. It's only the best fanedit until another fanedit comes along that's better.
The Alternative Edition Redux is the latest version of the Spicediver cut, the one that's also included in the Plaion release. The AI version on youtube is just the older 2012 480p edit upscaled to 4k.

Plaion's encode is from the original project files of Spicediver, so it's not a re-encode of his 30GB release, it comes straight from the source files. But since two different people did the two encodes, you can't directly compare their size. We have seen so many times that a smaller size encode can beat a higher one. In any case, yes, Plaion is a little bit better, but certainly nowhere near "1/4th better" (30 vs 40).

There is only one 1080p fanedit by Spicediver himself, so it's that one they included. They worked directly with him.

Of course a "better" fanedit can be made, but this one has historical value by now I would say and is worth having for this reason alone, even if a "better" one is made!

Is the extended documentary worth owning/buying the set for?
If you want a better TC 1080p blu-ray, 1080p Extended Alan Smithee TV Cut, and the extended documetnary then yes.

Maybe the 4K UHD might have a better encode and maybe a better 5.1 track than the more common versions.

But just for the extended documentary at $150 USD, I do not think that it is worth it.

The Extended TV Cut audio commentary is interesting at various lengths, but Max Evry makes some curious statements from time to time when injecting some of his own personal opinions.

You mean the one with the Acrylic case? If you can even find it, vanished without a trace, doesn't even show up on ebay.

Agreed.

Keep it real. Official versions only.

People can do their own fan edits (they have plenty of material to work with).

Looks like Imprint is out here to...

I think I'm good though, already own the Arrow and the two humongous Koch/Plaion sets.

The acrylic one was Koch, while the 'reissued' big cardboard box is from Plaion. The additional 'Spicediver' cut is the only on disc thing that I think was changed between the Koch and Plaion issues, IIRC Plaion ended up giving it an improved encode.

The Plaion box goes for around $80-$100ish, significantly cheaper than this new box and with more on-disc content than this new set too. Love the look of the package from Imprint though.

Yes, the Plaion one can be found (this was after they changed their name from Koch Films to Plaion Pictures). But the one in the acrylic case is the one I’m talking about, which seems impossible to find.

Ah, I was semi-responding to Trekkie as he asked about a Plaion set. I know Koch/Plaion are the same, but only the set released under Plaion has the slightly better encoded Spicediver disc so I try to separate them whenever I refer to either of the big boxes.

The acrylic set was only sold directly from Kochs store, getting it outside of Germany was hard even at release (it averaged $200-$300 on eBay). I had it for a while, but it was fragile and on mine at least the acrylic case seemed to slowly become 'unglued'. Sold it long ago for the Plaion box with the slightly improved Spicediver encode.

Outside of Germany? No. Outside of the EU? Yes.

You keep claiming that the SpiceDiver edit in the Plaion set is slightly better, but that is inaccurate.

It is a 1080p rebuild wherever possible, it is not simply a 480p upscale nor just a different encode of the original 480p version.

A full 1080p remaster constitutes improvements far greater than just slightly better.

I just want a 1008p version of the Spicediver cut on disc, don't care about the case.

Then you have to find a second hand copy of this version.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dune-4K-Blu-ray/356788/

Unless Plaion (FKA Koch) does a rerelease.

Ok so hang on, Arrow and Imprint and the Plaion/koch editions
Which edition contains pretty much all of the special features?

I got the Arrow edition and am probably gonna get this edition as well, does that mean I still need to get the German edition to get all of the special features?
