How many of you have seen one or more movies where the movie's director also appeared on-screen as an actor? I have seen several, and I am impressed by their ability to both act in and direct a movie at the same time. Here are some films in this category that I have seen:
"Citizen Kane" (1941)-Not only did Orson Welles star in and direct this movie, he also wrote the screenplay. In doing so, he broke a lot of the rules of cinema and created several new rules. "High Anxiety" (1978)-Mel Brooks played the lead and directed this excellent Hitchcock spoof. I wonder if this film's style inspired some of the jokes in the 1980 film "Airplane". "The War of the Roses" (1989)-Danny DeVito not only directed this movie, he also played Oliver's divorce lawyer in the film. "Reservoir Dogs" (1992)-This was Quentin Tarantino's first movie as a director, and he also played the getaway driver Mr. Brown. "Matilda" (1996)-Danny DeVito directed this movie and played Matilda's slimy jerk of a father. He also narrated the film at the beginning. "Life is Beautiful" (1997)-Roberto Benigni starred in and directed this Italian film, which also starred his real-life wife. Nicoletta Braschi. When he and his son are sent to a concentration camp (and his wife asks to join them), he goes way out of his way to protect his son by fooling him into thinking they are trying to win a tank as a prize. "The Horse Whisperer" (1998)-Robert Redford starred in this film and played the title character. It is a very minimalist film with excellent scenery where most of the time, it's just him and the horse, so he was a director of multiple species of actors in this film. "Space Cowboys" (2000)-Clint Eastwood directed and starred in this underrated film where four men in their 60s go into space to fix a Russian satellite in danger of burning up in Earth's atmosphere. "Zoolander" (2001)-Ben Stiller gave a memorable performance as the title character, and his film is as visually stylish as his ridiculously good-looking character. What do you think of movies where the director is also an actor in the movie? Does that improve or harm the film in your opinion? If you think that improves the film, what other such films would you recommend for me to see? Any answers that you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Have a nice day. |
