I think this is going to be a totally new franchise, something we've not seen before. Hopefully we'll get a glimpse of it at this years E3? Why else would Sony give reporters a sneaky look unless the same trailer were due for public viewing soon?

this was the PS2's strength...you'd see a random game by some no-name developer and it would kick ass...God of War etc, DMC..etc..

Yes, I agree. They are building the hype for E3.

Hmmmm BBC reporting on videogames......
Its probably something already announced but that they, for some reason (probably because they were told to) , think its completely new Anyway, videogame venues this year should bring more to light. My PS3 is for MotorStorm and Ratchet, so far. And of course, my blu-rays fix ![]() Love my 360 Elite. J. |

I'll post what little I know and can reveal about this particular topic, based on conversations with some contacts inside Sony.
(1) My contacts aren't sure exactly which title the BBC reporter is referring to, but had a good guess. (2) If it's what I think it is, the title in question is an internally developed title from a Sony studio. (3) The trailer the BBC reporter was talking about was most likely excerpted from a bunch of teaser trailers circulated internally at Sony some weeks ago (and before anyone asks, no, I have not seen these teasers personally). More than that, I can't say without getting people in trouble. Carry on. ![]() |

Sounds very interesting...
I don't own a PS3....yet... I'm still an Xbox person (controller is best for FPS)... But if this game has anything like a 4D or possibly the capability to utilize the 3D functioning on some up-coming TV's, I'm all there... I would love for either company (MS or Sony) to release a game that could be played in 3D (I'm talking having to wear those clear glasses they give you at some IMAX shows).... Also, 4D as portrayed in those videos is different than the 4D I've always thought of... 4D to me is actions that coincide with the video to produce an effect.. For instance, when I was at Universal Studios, they had Shrek 4D which had water spraying, air bursts to simulate wind, etc... Maybe 4D in a video game is totally different, and I'm just confused... But, I'm already 50% of the way to buying a PS3 (even though I said I never would), just waiting for the rumoured 120GB to drop... |

4d represents length width height and time.
I think it will be awhile till we see time fully simulated in games. For time to truely exist in a game you would need a simulation of 24/7 seasons, years, ageing of objects including wood, trees, etc This would include objects such as wood fenses having a set life time until which they will degrade and break, including lessening that life time by actions of the player, use etc. Including individual grass shards life time with it being reduced by it being stepped on. We have seen things close to 4d, but the concept of all objects being on a continuous never repeating time line like in the real world is still a little far away. This would be a eventually death of even shards of grass... As long as games continue to grasp objects like grass and trees, rocks, and planets being immortal then we will still be seeing 3d renditions. |

Perhaps a bit off subject I don't know, but sod ya 3D glasses! Who needs to shell out on a new compatible TV when I could use the HDTV I already have far beyond what these so-called 3D TVs offer. I want the 3D headtracking thing implemented into a game. head tracking +5.1 surround sound = one immersive gameplay experience!! I've got no idea what this big secret is, however I looked into this 'Heavy Rain' thing which I knew nothing about either and found some screenshots on IGN. There is one picture where the woman is pointing a gun at the screen and looking at you crying... now correct me if I'm wrong but would that not be a perfect moment to have headtracking!!! No greater suspense/drama than a photorealistic cg character who is obviously disturbed at present pointing a gun at you and following you around the room. Can't get much more immersive than that!!! FPS would be more realistic not only in terms of seeing over and around objects, but having the on screen characters 'make eye contact' because they know where your eyes are. (Based on Jonny Lee's glasses approach) Spooky and by far the next level of awesomeness!!!!! Okay, so the experience is only good for the one person being tracked... but who ever bought a PS3 for their mates to play??
For those who didn't read my post about headtracking some weeks back, checkout the idea behind it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw and yes I know there is a similar demo achieved using Playstation Eye, but this video is clearer and the input seems more responsive. Sorry my point here is, 3D games are rendered in 3D but presented to us in 2D at present. Lets see some 3D games first!!! 4D... unless you're doing some hyperspeed time travelling (ala The Time Machine) in realtime... what is the point? The texture memory requirements is impressive, and I would assume opens up options for rendering huge richly detailed worlds without constantly streaming textures from the BD Last edited by egon_spengler; 02-26-2008 at 07:54 PM. |
