I have LED lights in my 61" samsung. You should see greens on that thing. They are crazy vivid. It's wild.

What is the purpose of these lights (except to make it look cool)?

Is it against eye-strain or something?

Yes. A totally pitch black room leads to too much iris change from dark to bright scenes, that can strain the eyes. You want a small amount of ambient light at all times.

In addition to relieving eye strain, the back lights increase contrast in dark scenes and improve black level of your TV set!

Actually, it really doesn't change your TV set but it changes the iris of your eye. In a dark seen normally iris would open and takes more light into the eye, so blacks may look like grey. If the iris closes in a dark seen (due to back light), the amount of lights get into your eye is low and therefore, black levels of the picture would be improved and the blacks would look blacker.

It works like the auto iris function of recent projectors that enhances contrast. Magic!

Do these aftermarket LED's actually color change with what is displayed on the TV like the amber light? If so how do you bring them in-line with your video feed so they know what colors are on screen?
