Pancreatic cancer unfortunately has something like a 3% 5-year survival rate, which really sucks. It's usually caught too late, and it's location in the body makes it very easy to spread. I'd often thought though that one of the bigger risk factors for the disease was someone who drank a lot for a large portion of their life... though I guess genetics play a factor as well.

Such a sad story.

Yes, painlessly, in your sleep, in old age, without a long miserable illness preceding it, without losing your mental abilities first, without first losing any major physical abilities.

As someone who lost two friends through this disease I can state pretty categorically drinking plays no role whatsoever.

And, yep, it's pretty much a death sentence (but the good news is it's that fast -- sometimes much better than lingering around for years. Both my friends went within two months of diagnoses).

Yeah, my father-in-law is fighting it right now. He was diagnosed last December, but the crap just keeps coming back and moving to other places. He's pretty much given up on therapy so he can semi-enjoy his last few months. He smokes a pipe like it's going out of style, but i've never known him to hardly ever drink.
