Glory for a movie, North and South for a television series.

And honorable mention for Ken Burns's doc.

The Conspirator......cause I'm in it.

Not really my favorite, though.

The best is Ken Burns documentary, but it's not a movie.

I have a very soft spot for Gettysburg. I do have to laugh at some of the fat reenactors portraying the soldiers, and it's a PG war movie, pretty clean and bloodless, but I enjoy the film quite a bit, warts and all.
Glory is a great movie, but I've watched Gettysburg more often.
Shenandoah is pretty darn good, in a clean cut family kind of way.
The directors cut of Gods and a Generals is better than the theatrical, but it's still not really a good movie.
Cold Mountain has a few good scenes, but it's a Homerian Odyssey rather than a proper civil war movie.
The Red Badge of Courage is okay, should have been better.
Lincoln was very good, but it's a behind the scenes civil war movie.
Ride with the Devil has a great cast, but it's a big meh from me.
Gone with the Wind is a soap opera set during the civil war with incredibly inaccurate dresses. Drive my wife nuts to see them even though she loves the movie. Not much war onscreen, but does actually show carpetbaggers.
The Horse Soldiers is an okay flick.
The Great Locomotive Chase is a Disneyfied adventure film based on a true story. Kind of like watching the Davy Crockett stuff.....cause it has Davy Crockett.
Wicked Spring is a low budget movie made by someone who really wanted authentic type clothing and gear but could only have a few people in the woods telling a mediocre story while wearing said gear.

And lastly, my absolute favorite is: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. It's not really a proper civil war movie, but it actually got quite a bit of Glorietta Pass correct in it's western garb.

Glory

Gettysburg

Although not a movie, I have been enjoying the TV series Turn: Washington's Spies. Is this Civil War or Revolution? Not really a US history buff.

Gods and Generals. It really is a pity we won't get the conclusion of that fantastic trilogy of Civil War films, The Last Full Measure.

Thumbs up

Glory is undeniably very well-made. Unfortunately, it suffers from "white audience pandering" syndrome, when the story of the 54th really should be told from an African-American perspective in order to truly do justice to the real thing. It's also blunted by some pretty weak writing and acting in spots.

But damn is it well-staged and photographed!

How original!

I love it when people don't bother to read anything in the entire thread before posting.

Glory is probably my favorite movie. The Civil War piece I liked the most tho is the mini series North and South. One of the very few that gives fair treatment to both sides. If you haven't seen it check it out.

Turn is American Revolution. The opener dictates it's set around 1776-77. =P Washington was President number one. Civil War was much later during the 1860s.

Some I'd go for: Glory, Gettysburg, Lincoln, Gods and Generals (though it's inferior to how well Gettysburg was done, being the second movie)...

I'm not familiar with The Beguiled. And, I'm not so much a fan of his movies anymore, mainly just his earlier work.
