Perhaps in the later part of the year, the BD exclusive studios can even up the anticipation of a movie release: release the BD version two-four weeks in advance of DVD/VHS.
A problem could be that the analog output from a BD player can be fed into a DVD recorder. It might be a recipe for creating a ton of puny commercial pirates, all hawking their wares on eBay, etc.

The impact would only means something with the really big titles, right?

I wouldn't worry too much about Microsoft here, a spokesman for them seems to believe that because LG are releasing a dual format player that that alone proves the value of HD-DVD...

I'm still waiting to see a AAA title exclusive to HD-DVD (please tell me if there is) but all I see are wave after wave of top titles being released exclusive to blu-ray. In fact isn't it the case that the majority of the top 30 DVD releases last year are blu-ray only?

Not really. Pirates usually prefer ANY source. Some joker over here got busted filming a movie in the theater using his CAMERA PHONE! No doubt, it'd sell if he had made it out.

DVD pirates need only a good video source to get going. The sound doesn't even have to be in surround. So this could mean a screener (Jurassic Park 3 was out the same time as the theatrical release) or a smuggled DVD master copy. I doubt they'd do a DVD copy out of BD. Too much work.

I've got an old front PJ that needs replacing first. That's what I don't want to skimp on when all of this stuff starts to get replaced. The display comes first (that's where the real difference is anyway), then the "player". I have only a few "must have" titles with Lawrence of Arabia at the very top of the list. That's my goal, to have a new PJ, new player and the very first title to be LoA.

bootlegs only flouish when commercial versions aren't available. point: alot of people i know have Battle Royale (Kinji Fukasaku) despite the fact that it hasnt been licensed in north america (due to very high price demands). of course the bootlegs that sell best ARE in fact the better ones, though concert bootleggers tend not to care.
