I really don't care for JJ Abrams' work. He seems like a light weight to me. I guess he does some enjoyable decent things but for the most part, he's kind of a flavor-of-the-month kind of director. Fringe seemed to me like an X-Files rip off. It seemed so self-conscious of its coolness that it was tiresome. I am biased because of my status as an admitted X-Phile, but we'll see what happens. It might get better...or worse...or canceled.

I liked how they casted Gywneth Paltrow and Jennifer Garner's love child as their lead role.

Seriously though, I thought that if you ignore that The X-Files ever existed, then its a very interesting and new show. That was my difficulty though was ignoring The X-Files and trying to take it on as itself.

Right now its too early for me to tell if I'll continue to watch the entire season, but it definately has caught my interest for the next episode.

I agree. I thought the "mad scientist" was hilarious! I lost it when he was in the back seat of the car and all of a sudden said "I just peed my pants...just a squirt".

While I will watch this show every week, it felt a bit like a X-Files rip off. Should be entertaining though, as long as they continue to give out information.

I think the show would have benefitted from a *Darker Edge* like X-Files. Gives more depth to the realism.

Had anybody else heard anything about this, it does look promising, expecially from J.J. Abrams, the creator of LOST.

I watched it and I thought it was okay. Wasn't what I expected it to be, kind of like a wanna-be X-Files.

I'm a big fan of J.J. Abrams and Alex Kurtzman. I really liked the pilot. I can't wait to see the other episodes in the series. I have found that the sixth episode of a series is the episode that tells how good a series is going to be. I understand the X-Files comparisons, but J.J. will throw some original stuff in there too. J.J. has always been inspired by other movies/shows, but also put his own spin on them. I suspect he'll do the same with Fringe.

Picture quality was by far amazing, that was the first thing that struck me. It's definitely a show I'll stay interested in for a while. It could start off alot like lost. In my opinion, lost's first episode wasnt the best, but it got a LOT better from there.
Really? I thought the PQ was sort of subpar. A little too grainy for my tastes, but I realize I'm in the minority when it comes to not liking an overly noticeable amount of grain. I don't mind a little bit of grain at all, but this was sort of interefering to me. The show itself was ok... I'm not sure I'll stick with it. I'll give ti a few more episodes.

I'm not a big fan of JJ Abrams either for one reason only: inconsistency. I loved the first two seasons of Alias (two seasons of perhaps the best television ever), but the show eventually turned into a convuluted mess that was extremely testing all of my patience. Same with Lost... the first episode was awesome, but it also eventually turned into a mess. I heard Lost got better again, but I never stayed with it long enough to reach that payoff.

Plus, here's my thing... JJ Abrams always comes up with amazing plots and premises... but after about a season, it seems that he starts to make it up as he goes. There's no long-term plan.

That's why I love Joss Whedon. He seems to have a set plan of where he wants his series to go even seasons in advance as evident by the foreshadowing in all of his series (done best in Buffy since it lasted the longest). Sure, there are always some things you create as you go, but with Whedon, it always seemed that he always had the large idea of where he wanted his series to go and he filled in as necessary to meet that end goal. JJ Abrams has a good initial idea but he fails to execute the rest after the first good season or so.

Personally, I'm very eager to catch Whedon's new series Doll House in January, especially with Buffy alum Eliza Dushku as the lead role. Hopefully it won't disappoint. But i'm pretty sure that if I end up loving it, Fox will eventually cancel it (i.e Wondefalls, Firefly, etc).

It's funny you say that because I am re-watching LOST from the beginning now cause my wife missed the first 3 seasons and you really get to see how it all fits together, that there really was a master plan from the beginning.

yeah. but me, on the other hand, i cant stand shows that look so clean, i think it almost looks "less hd" to me. i dunno why it just does. the more grain the more sharpness. its the same with lost too.

I don't mind some grain. For example, Xmen 3 has a fine coating of grain all throughout due to being filmed on Super35mm... it doesn't look bad to me at all even with a thin film of grain throughout the entire film; it even enhances the film-like look. Fringe to me, though, had an excessive amount of grain that almost interfered with my enjoyment. I even felt the urge to cut my Noise Reduction setting on my Sammy to high, when I usually leave it off, and even then I still noticed a fine amount of grain, though it was less intrusive.

I guess to each his own.

haha that is sooo true! I read a review somehwere where someone said the same thing.

I think it will stay one for a while....hopefully. I enjoyed the the pilot...although I did feel some Lost rip-off moments. Especially the music right before they would cut to commercial. You know, the violin or cello or whatever sounds getting louder and then wham! cut to black and then commercial...lol.

The scientist pissing his pants in the car was hilarious. I think the actor plays him very well and Joshua Jackson is pretty good when he shares a scene with him. I'm sold on this show

Same for me...especially the scene in the beginning when the two FBI agents are in what I think was a hotel room...so much grain...I even saw white patches of it too.

Yeah, this show definitely caught my interest. Haven't seen the pilot yet but I'll watch the encore repeat tonight. Also, need something to watch until 24 and Lost come back on the air in January. Also, to mention they'll be showing a trailer for 24: Redemption tonight during the show.
