I only liked his early stuff. I guess he had some agenda or style that I didn't care for. I guess I am just getting old. I got to the point of thinking he was no longer trying to be funny but rather be offensive. Maybe I grew out of his style of every other word being the f word as funny. Say something funny rather than trying to shock, sorry but that is not funny.

Then you obviously either a} weren't watching George Carlin and you have no idea who we're talking about or b} weren't watching for the REAL meaning of the jokes and missed the point entirely.

I find it funny when folks said/say that about George Carlin, it's like, have you even seen more than one joke? Or did you just see the joke where he lists off the massive list of obscenities and say 'oh that's not funny!'?

Heard this on the radio thi morning. Was very sad to hear it as he'd made me laugh a lot throughout my life. It also made me even more disappointed that I didn't get to see his show last time he was in town.

RIP

You are right his 20 some minute skit about suicide is something that is funny. I guess the last time that I saw him he made have been having some issues since a couple of days later he checked into a rehab facility. He seemed like a very angry man rather than funny.

If I missed the point then so did everyone else in the building since no one was laughing. The scene was very quiet.

I guarentee there is no such thing. And even if there was, why should he? "Let's see you mocked me your whole life, put down anyone who honored me, hmmm yeah I think you're okay any way." NOT.

He led a long life, and made millions of people laugh. That's all that any comedian could ever hope to achieve. He will not be forgotten.

It is sad that he is gone but I stand by the statement that his last few years had lost the funny aspect. I stand by the statement that in his early years he was hilarious.

In his later years he was hit or miss. He had a lot more hits than misses though. His books are some of the funniest things I have ever read. The world will be less funny because he is gone. Thankfully he left us 71 years of pure genius.

I have to agree with the previous poster in that, every time I thought Carlin was no longer relevant, he would surprise me. The man was a rarity among entertainers: socially biting, socially relevant, a good actor, and a decent human being.
My parents turned me on to Carlin when I was about 10 years old because he wasn't as "dirty" as Red Foxx. Carlin was a guy that made you think about why you laughed at his jokes.
I'll miss Carlin's comedy and the way he came off as one of your crazy uncles.
Thanks for everything George.

A giant voice has been silenced.

The world will be diminished without you.

Ironically, I had just bought his book "Brain Droppings" from Barnes & Nobles the other day. I will spend the day reading it in his honor, and laughing at the musings of the greatest stand-up comedian ever.

I know you died - not "expired, like a magazine subscription" or "passed away" - in a hospital - not the result of a "theraputic misadventure" resulting in "negative patient care outcome".

Yours was one life definitely not worth losing.

RIP George... you will be missed.

Unhappy

Words can't describe how shocked I was this morning when I heard the news!
Carlin had a wit that was sharp and cut through all the bull shit ! As we all know his style of stand up was really a philosophical diatribe on man and man's place in the universe. And all the stupid ideas we cling on to without asking Why, or pointing out the absurd logic we use to defend our positions whether real or fancied. A sad day indeed. His last HBO show dealt with how we act when death is confronted. I guess he knows now. He will be missed by millions.
