Default Question about Rocky Balboa PQ

I just got the movie and I was wondering. Is the movie kinda grindy in some scenes,, mostly dark/night scenes? Its also fuzzy in lighter scenes too, dont know how they gave the this movie an excellent review on quality

It's supposed to look like that.

Long story short, Rocky Balboa shot fairly low budget and fast=film grain in night scenes

He shot the end fight in HD because he wanted it to look like an HBO broadcast

Stallone wanted Rocky Balboa to have the same look and feel of the original, so he shot it with that grainy, muted color look. However, he did want the fight to be as close to watching a real fight as possible, which is why he used the HBO format and high definition to shoot the fight. You should listen to the audio commentary on the disc . . . it's actually very interesting.

Default Rocky Balboa PQ

Anybody else out there watched Rocky Balboa on Blu?

I am a bit dissapointed in the PQ as it seems consistently in almost all scenes to be slightly "noisy" and movement can seem slightly blurred (eg. if Rocky is talking and turns his head the movement is slightly blurred). Also the picture in some ways reminds me of a very good upscaled DVD, just a bit lacking in detail.

All feedback welcomed.

I thought Rocky Balboa was great . . . the noise you're talking about is most likely film grain, as I know it's very apparent. I didn't see anything I would describe as blurry, or anything lacking in detail. Is your set calibrated?

I can't believe I never looked at it, but the review on this site gave it a 5/5 for audio and video.

The 'blur' effect that you are talking about is often attributed to the way that the TV is handling the signal. When researching for my new TV, I found that to happen a lot with TVs that had Cinemotion or Motionflow turned on. Also, if your TV can only output 1080i, a 1080p signal tends to have that effect as well. Personally, I don't have any motion blurring problems with 'Rocky Balboa'.

As for the "noise", that would most likely be due to director's artistic choice. The grain and visual pallet of the film is trying to keep this installment in sync with its predecessors. I'm sure that they wanted to trigger a sense recall within the millions of people who went to see the first films in theatres.

Stallone was very particular on how he shot this, as he wanted this to mirror the look of the first film as much as possible, and then have the feel of a real boxing match at the end, hence the sudden change to "broadcast" style HD.
