I am a long time gamer (PONG era) and movie fan. When the latest round of consoles were in development, I kept my eye on what Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo were developing this time around. From the last console generation I have a Dreamcast and a PS2 that I bought after Dreamcast ceased production. I don't really want to have a ton of game consoles around, so I try to pick one to last for that generation.
What really caught my attention early on was the announcement of the development of the Cell processor by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. If I remember correctly the first P.R. announcement I read was back in 2004. The first PR announcement I read on it was about the Cell project kick off back in 2001, before I even had a PS2. The thought of a multiple core processor was a bit foriegn to me, and it just stuck out in my mind. Later on, as plans for the upcoming 360 and PS3 continued trickling out, the talk moved toward the new HD disc formats, Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Sony, obviously was pursuing Blu-ray inclusion given they helped develop the format, but at the time, it was widely assumed that Microsoft's next Xbox would include HD-DVD. Knowing how expensive DVD players were upon release - even without progressive scan or DTS bitstreaming - I knew my easiest shot into both next generation gaming and movies would be from a game console. Given the price sensitivity of game consoles, having a built-in manufacturer price subsidy never hurts. As things progressed, Microsoft ultimately passed on having the HD-DVD player built in, not wanting to wait for HD-DVD and HDMI spec finalization. That made the decision easier for me, and I opted to wait for the PS3's release before buying a console. I pre-ordered it, and had the system on launch day. The PS3 is both my game and HD movie player, and I couldn't be happier. Plus, it's fully backward compatible with my PS2 library. It made a lot more sense to me to get a PS3 than buy a standalone movie player. At the time both Blu-ray and HD-DVD were brand new. I figured that of the two formats, Blu-ray would be more successful just due to the fact that over 100 million PS2s were sold the previous generation - each with a DVD player built in. Shipping PS3s with Blu-ray players built in seemed like a bit of a no brainer. If for whatever reason Blu-ray failed as a format, I still had a PS3 for games. Buying a standalone player that failed, HD-DVD or Blu-ray, would just leave me SOL. Anyway, the PS3 is used in my household equally for games and movies in my home theater room. It is also the SACD player in that room, as well as the media server, bringing up music, photos, and pictures from the laptop and home office PC. And it does a fantastic job with everything. wow i seem to be in the minority here that bought the PS3 for a gaming console originally (guess thats why this is blu-ray.com huh?). i previously owned the original playstation and a PS2, and i had no bad experiences from either
but main reasons for the PS3 over 360 was the funcionality of the console, there were features that were standard on the PS3 that would cost extra on the 360 (wireless controllers, wireless internet connection, free online play, etc), and game franchises (god of war, metal gear solid, gran turismo) i didnt really know much about blu ray until i bought PS3 and got my free movies and started researching more about it, so that just turned out to be the icing on the cake ![]() |

I decided to go with the ps3 for high def movies, I rarely use it gaming. I did gamble back when it came out, but looks like it was the right choice.
I really have only played, Resistance, Motorstorm and Soul Calibur IV on the ps3. |

When I bought it 1 month after launch, I bought it to play games on my HDTV...but then I realized how awesome Blu-ray movies looked compared to upconverted DVDs. I don't really game too much but I do watch as many Blu-ray movies as I can get my hands on (And have time for)

I bought my PS3 at launch as a foolproof way to enjoy high-def movies. At the time it was one of the cheapest players on the market which was reason enough to buy one, but not only that, it also plays games! So if BD was to fail I could still recoup my losses by selling it as a game console. Now it continues to impress as it still plays, the now only, high-def media but by also being one of the easiest players to update software and firmware and it stays on the cutting edge by decoding all the newest sound formats. I'd have to say it's one of the most rewarding purchases I've ever made. Oh, and did I mention it plays games? I recently sold my 360 on eBay because it just doesn't compare to the game console that just keeps on giving.

I love my PS3 so much, I convinced my sister to buy one too. The final nail in the coffin so to speak was when Sony said they were dropping backward compatibility. As soon as she heard that, she bought the 80 GB model.

I buy the PS3 because I believe in it.
I believe in what it can do, and it did just that. It justify my purchase enough that I got my brother to get one, my parents to get one, my brother in law to get one, and my (Wii fans) nephew to get one. Guess what? They all thanked me for it. ![]() |
