No, mate. Not directed at you personally. I'm talking from my own point of view. I don't rate the man or anything he did, except maybe Dr. Strangelove. I find the pretentiousness of his work unbearable, that's why you won't find me licking his dead backside like some Empire reading film luvvie.

I'd say go for both mate, I own A Clockwork Orange myself and love it, the PQ for such an old movie is awesome.
I don't personally own the Shining, but have seen it a few times and really enjoyed it, and as others in this thread have said, the PQ is supposedly really good.

From what i've heard every Kubrick film has had a decent transfer.

I'd go for Clockwork Orange, imo it's a more entertaining film. PQ is a bit of a letdown compared to Shining though. You'll "need" to get both at some point though, Shining is also one of the great classics.

Labeling someone as pretentious is a very dubious claim and much harder to back up than you would think. It implies that you know(knew) Kubricks heart and his intent in all things film. It implies that you believe he was not genuine in his artistic endeavors and that he somehow compromised his resolve. Really, the only movie that fits your description would be 2001: ASO. Yes, it's lofty. Yes, it's ambitious. Yes, it's not everyone's cup of tea. The difference between it and a million other pretentious ideas for movies would be in the flawless execution of those ideas. That exucution doesn't come from some artsy-fartsy whim. He was a worker and it shows in the details.
You prefer your filmmakers go the safe route and take the sure thing? You don't strike me as that type, so i wonder what makes Kubrick the exception?
Is he overrated in your opinion maybe? Is it fanboys like me that ruin it for you? Well you have plenty middle of the road, vanilla, whitebread directors and movies to pay attention to these days.

Just watched The Shining. Transfer was good for a catalog title. The special features on the disc was great. I love watching anything about Kubrick. Just seeing him in his element on the special features was awesome. The movie was just as entertaining as I remembered it.

Still haven't watched ACWO in Blu yet. Might check it out and the features tomorrow.

Does anybody know how long the sale is supposed to last? I bought ACO and Enter the Dragon yesterday, but The Shining was sold out. I'm thinking about buying it at another store.

Buy Both...if you can't buy both, wait until you can buy both.

You are going to get both anyway.

Buy Both.

The sale is supposed to run through Saturday. If your Best Buy's aren't able to help you out, you could also try Circuit City as they are running the sale for Enter the Dragon and Shining as well. I was actually going to make my purchase (Enter the Dragon and The Shining) at CC since they were right there in my backyard but I had a $5 coupon from Best Buy. Yes, I'm a thrifty SOB

I just picked up Clockwork yesterday at BB. I love The Shining, but Clockwork is my favorite of the two. Best Kubrick film is Dr. Strangelove coming out later this year.

i'd recommend the shining, especially if you've haven't seen a clockwork orange,
that movie is def. not for everyone.
although i enjoyed both and think they looked very good for their age,
full metal jacket is my favorite from kubrick though.
