100,000 people buying - $2,400.00 macbooks > 100,000 people paying 6.99 for a movie or whatever.

Those that want blu will have it either way. They are just stiffing themselves. I used to be an Apple hater but the last year or so I have changed my views. Since owning my iPhone (yeah I know its not a macbook) I think apple is a great company with lots of innovation up it's sleeve. They did bring us the ipod which revolutionized music. They give us our digital copies which is also very nice.

I wouldn't be too hard on apple for no blu drives yet. If you want one, get a pc. You do have a choice
Exactly and I'm exercising my choice to buy a PC. I'm the opposite of you, I was really keen on Apple when they decided to switch to Intel processors but now totally hate the company and their tactics. I'll get back to my Blu-Ray point in a second, but here's the stuff that bothered me:

1) No OSX installations on PC
2) Shitty, shitty version of iTunes PC (even on a Quad Core) - the Conspirary Theorist in me thinks this is to coerse people into buying a Mac
3) Still relatively expensive hardware
4) Lag or refusa to adopt industry-wide standards (Blu-ray, HDMI, etc.)

Back to Blu-Ray, he blames licensing costs (this time). Last time he said that the industry is clearly moving towards digital downloads (which it is not). What's the excuse going to be next time?

And, let's not let what Apple did to music happen to video. I can't believe people are happy with 128 kps lossy mp3s, yet they play them on the $200 state of the art iphones/ipods. I can't imagine (and it scares me) that one day everyone is going to be thrilled with 4MBS 720p video with two channel sound.

</end rant>

I am really starting to dispise Apple. They tell you what you're supposed to like and what you're not supposed to like. And all the lemmings follow - like lemmings!

if that were the case, sony never would have released a video store.

its probably more like them not being able to make enough money to put it in their computers yet. tho..not even giving us the option is pretty lame.

I respectfully disagree. When you bundle Blu-Ray with a computer, one of the first things someone is going to do (especially a young person) is go out and buy/rent a Blu-Ray movie. And once people see the quality of a Blu-Ray movie and compare it to the Apple video store, there will be no comparison.

I have two PS3s (and I know a lot of people who bought a PS3 just for Blu-Ray). They, nor I, are satisfied with the quality of the online Sony movies compared to Blu-Ray.

if that were the case imo, sony never would have released a video store if they were worried about downloads cutting into blu-ray sales. the 2 compliment each other. so for them to worry about blu-ray killing their downloads doesn't make sense. two different markets/uses

i think its all about their bottom line, and right now, the drives are too expensive for them to include without charging way too much and people noticing.

While I mostly agree with your list..

1 - In essence, they are using OS X on a PC. Just not allowing it to be used mainstream without their hardware. That's the key. I think the community is going to be in for a very big surprise someday

2 - Never had a problem with my iTunes. I actually like the windows version much better than the mac version.

3 - Yes, always will be since they are the company controlling what is made and so on. A monopoly of sorts But they are far from price gouging. Look at the services they offer their customers. I don't see any MS genius bars around here. Just an observation.

4 - I agree with that. However, Apple seems to listen to it's customers most of the time. They could be waiting for something? I don't know. I do agree though. Blu-ray would be nice as well as hdmi.

I really don't care about my mp3's. To me they all sound the same. They really do. I could probably play a 128 and 256 mp3 of the same song and you would probably never tell the difference. The problem is, you assume everyone wants the same things as you. They don't. Most people are happy with the way things are. The quality vs size is not justifiable. It really isn't. If you want high end audio, you won't be buying it off itunes to start. Either CD or LP. Then you have all the hardware. See my point? Not everyone wants that or needs it.

It's a market thing. Like the post above states. You have different markets. Some will buy blu's, some will download. Some will do both. It's all about what fits that persons lifestyle. Either way, they are still making money, the plus side of it is they may even make more because that one person may buy the blu and the digital copy to boot. You never know.

It's all relative. I buy blu's, but I also watch digital copies too and never even watch the blu. Weird huh? Again, it's based on your lifestyle

Perhaps the truth is more simple.
There is no Blu-ray slot-loading drive which can be built-in MBP/MB's thin body yet in mass production.
MBP/MB require 9mm hight slot loading drive.

He might be right. Not enough room and Apple is not going to increase size just to squeeze in new tech. Sucks, but makes sense.

very good point yamamoto.

also as someone who recently made the switch to apple i gotta say i love the comment "most windows programs don't work on windows either".

also alot of these "guesses" that apple is only trying to protect their appletv, well why not add a bdp thats a pain in the $$$, make it a pain to use update, make it so just when you think it will play movies it won't, kind of like how the bdp's have totally crappy dvd upconversion to greater emphasize blu, because if every unit made dvd look like oppo does, well, mass adoption would be a LOOOOOOONG way out. if this is a business move im fine with that. by apple and the bda. i do the same thing when i am showing off blu in my house, do i grab the best looking dvd heck no, do i let my panny30 play it, you betcha, then i throw in a blu, and whoever is sitting there is sold, im more evil then the big guys

new macbooks look great but... NO BD DRIVE. WTF? why are they members of the BDA if they're not going to embrace the technology? i'm very disappointed.
