No and I am glad you revived this thread. I did not know about these issues. I had the HDDVD so that explains a lot.

Thank you. And no, these people have nothing better to do than try to make you look bad.

I am sure they never entered a thread older than 2 months!

Danny Boyle has stated that it was supposed to look grainy and pixelated at times because he felt that particular aesthetic would better suit the film. So the blu seems to be accurate in terms of PQ and a marginal upgrade from the DVD, but the film is amazing and that is what really matters.

One last point.

The closing 'countryside' scenes were shot on film, which looks better in high def.

It's only a few minutes, but there you go.

The sound is better on the blu as well, don't forget, worthy of the price on it's own (esp since I bought it in a double pack for less than the costs of the DVD)

Not gonna lie, the first time I saw this film (bought it on dvd in like 2003-2004 I think), when that scene came up, the location instantly reminded of all those travel agency commercials I used to see for encouraging people to visit either England or Europe in general. They'd show a lot of shots in the ads of that particular landscape (or one of many, I don't even know, lol). And each commercial always, ALWAYS played the song "Dreams" by The Cranberries (they were pretty big during the early-mid 90's). One of my top 5 songs ever. Probably the reason why I love the song during the final moments of the film. That particular type of, I guess you call it "shoe-gazing" alternative rock music that was big from the late 80's to early 90's (The Church, Mazzy Star, The Cure's "pop period" in their discography with songs like "Friday I'm in Love", etc..). Anyone notice that the final end credits song was basically just a sped up version of that song?

Honestly? I think that music is more than half the reason why I love the ending of the movie (so glad Jim lives and the audience is assured that everything's going back to normal), as well as why this is my favorite zombie movie ever. I know it's normal for horror movies to have bad endings, but it's nice when every once in a while a good ending comes along. Especially when it's a "good" horror movie that takes itself seriously and knocks it outta the park in all facets of the film (writing, acting, special effects, cinematography, etc...)

TLDR: I love English alt. rock music.

Don't get me started on these bands, because I'll go on and on.

The soundtrack of 28 Days Later is pretty amazing, especially Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)." John Murphy's post-rock score is for the ages.

I saw 28 Days Later in the theater the weekend that it was released, and the Blu-ray transfer duplicates the theatrical presentation quite well. Until the final sequence, which was shot on film, the movie is not supposed to look crystal-clear.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite. When I saw it in the theatre, after the end credits, the words "What if..." came up and the deleted scene from the DVD/BD where
[Show spoiler]Jim dies in the hospital
played. I was like, "Oh, b!tchin', they really went all the way with it! How brave, and how sad they had to 'happy it up' for American audiences with that pre-credits
[Show spoiler]rescue
scene." I wish it played like that on my BD; to this day, I still select that deleted scene to play immediately after the film proper ends, and still consider it the film's "true" ending.

This is one of my worst-looking blu-rays, but it's a classic movie. I wonder how it will look in 4k.

Brian Eno is one of my favorite musicians. "An Ending (Ascent)" is from his album Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks, which is the score for the documentary For All Mankind. I highly reccomend the album, especially the track "Always Returning". The documentary is also wonderful and very trippy.

Danny Boyle is obviously a fan of Eno's, since he used the track "Deep Blue Day" (also featured in Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks) in Trainspotting.

John Murphy & Underworld's score for Sunshine is also wonderful. Especially the track "To Heal", which is played in the video diary scene.

The song at the end of "28 Days Later" was a last minute change that was forced on Danny Boyle to save money, as he describes in the book "Danny Boyle: Creating Wonder". They used that song because it was from a band that was already on the label that was putting out the soundtrack album.

The closing credits were intended to be set to the song "Hitsville UK" by The Clash. Boyle regretted losing the song so much that he used it in his next film, "Millions".

Try playing the end of the movie with "Hitsville UK", it changes it completely, giving it an amazing, cheerful energy. Shame the movie had to be altered. I totally love
[Show spoiler]the happy ending
, instead of
[Show spoiler]the deleted dark one
, but I wish the song had stayed.

He also intended to set the finale of "Sunshine", starting the moment the
[Show spoiler]nuclear device goes off
, to Coldplay's "Fix You", but was talked out of it and regretted it.

I played that song against the movie and wow does it work! He said he had tears when he saw it cut that way, but people told him it was too on the nose and he mistakenly listened and replaced it with score. The song would have played through the end of the film into the credits.

I have to say i respect him even more for being so candid in the book.

Don't get me wrong, artistically the original ending works much, much better (as well as makes much more sense). But again, after watching horror movie after horror movie and just always seeing bad endings all the time, it was nice. Same goes for the abysmal "An American Werewolf in Paris" and of course, "Dawn of the Dead". True story: I was 16 the first time I saw Dawn (which was the extended "directors cut" btw), it was getting close to ending at 2;30am. After over 2 hours of getting invested in these characters, I was getting pretty cheesed to know that in a matter of moments
[Show spoiler]Peter was gonna simply blow his brains out, and Fran was gonna decapitate herself
. When Peter
[Show spoiler]changed his mind and made a last ditch effort to leave, and that music kicked in I jumped outta my bed and was rooting for him. "Go Peter!! Get 'e!! Kill 'em!! (I'n getting goosebumps just typing this out). After spending 5-10 minutes of the film giving us that sense of dread, only to bring us back in at the last moment and end on an emotionally high for the last 2 minutes is one of the greatest movie watching moments of my life.

With the possible exception of the ending scenes shot on film, the DV portions have nothing to gain by being mastered/presented in 4K.

Does anyone know if the transfer used for the dvd is actually a film print that that the DV transfered to, or is it straight from the DV, because to me it looks way to murky to be straight from DV? When I saw it in theaters it was a film print so it would've looked this way. Something like Jackass when it came to dvd got a transfer that appeared straight from DV. If the blu-ray of 28 Days Later is straight from the DV it'd have to look way better than the dvd, because the dvd doesn't just seem to look bad because it's DV, but that it's DV transfered to film and then slapped on a dvd.

I'm very curious about this myself. It was presumably shot in PAL at 25fps, and again presumably slowed down to 24fps for theaters. The BD has weird artifacting in any shot that moves, which looks suspiciously like the results of PAL-NTSC conversion. I'd love to know in detail how the transfer was created and if there's a way for a better one - I know, I know, there are the limitations of the source material, but I still think it could look marginally better in HD, mostly losing the artifacts, which I find distracting.

It was on local tv a few months back in "HD" and it looked a heck of a lot better than my dvd, and looked much more like DV instead of DVD transfered to film.

There's a comparison on Caps-a-holic =>
http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...=28_days_later

The blu-ray loses the edge enhancement and the screen-shot of the cottage looks way better in HD

I never liked the DVD version, it always looked too clean for me. The bluray at least looks like messed up DV footage.
