Someone needs to make a comprehensive list of when the digital copies expire and turn it into a sticky. Someone should contact a moderator...

I believe the fox digital copy website indicates you can contact customer support if your pc fails and you need to re-use your digital copy.

Isn't that nice? You can call someone and ask them for permission to use something that you bought and own. Thank god the grocery store doesn't work that way.

Over-react much fellas? From my post on the insider's thread:

Quote:
I'm not sure who to direct this to, so Penton if this isn't one you can help with, hopefully you'll not mind.

It seems that a lot of the digital copies of movies (The Incredible Hulk, Juno, The Matrix, Constantine, etc) seem to have an expiration date on the codes.

Quote:
"Code that permits activation of Digital Copy may not be valid after 10/31/09".
Do they truly expire and are no longer usable? So, if someone buys one after the date, the disc is no good? Can someone contact the studios and see what the deal is here?

Appreciate your interaction here as always.

So basically what we can all take from this is: Digital Copies are not what they're cracked up to be. Playback issues, expiring codes, no true portability (getting a new computer? say bye-bye to your movies!) once the code expires, etc., But hey, Digital Downloads are the future, right?

Playback issues? Hardly.
Expiring Codes? Of COURSE! They are just like redeeming movie tickets.
True Portability? You can easily burn to a DVD data-disc on iTunes and copy to another computer that's registered with your iTunes account.

They're supposed to delegate support to them indefinitely after they're released?

I just don't find this to be a big deal, sorry.

But this isn't about the movie. This is about additional bonus content. Just like in 10 years I don't expect those BD-Live servers to work any longer.

If I bought JUST a digital copy of the movie, by itself, then yes- I'd expect it to work or to get support. But this is bonus content. You're buying the blu-ray movie. That analogy doesn't work well at all.

But if I choose to buy, let say Wall-E 3 disc edition... (the 3rd disc is the DC) I don't see why that disc wont work forever... It is not only a bonus its a main feature...

anyway...torrents will fix that...

What I think some are forgetting is that nowhere on the package does it say the digital copy will expire at a certain date until you actually open the case to activate it. Its a misleading marketing of digital copy. It should say + digital copy for a limited time. I am sure when people start buying these movies after the expired period we will see some litigation in this matter. Even those that have bought the movie and lets say didn't open it until after a year will have a case against the manufacturer down to the retailers.

Class action anyone?

The Hulk and Jumper say it on the back of the box. Very very small print but it's there.

you dont even need torrents.. just go to anyDVD from slysoft. Pay the 92 bucks for the year and you can rip any DVD to your harddrive.. thats right.. any dvd to your harddrive. We are talking about movies you own.. not ones you could get illegally from torrents. Buy it, rip it and its yours forever.

Screw these studios making a fortune off of us common people. Talking about "managed downloads" where they can charge you even more for stuff you already bought. Its all crap. Just go to that website or do a search.. 92 dollars for the year and you never have to worry about any of this.

That just mean I need to sell the rest of my digital copies quick before they expire.

Expiring codes aren't a huge concern for me... I've never used them and I don't have any place where using them would be feasible. I'd, honestly, be more likely to just DL/rip the movie if I needed it on a trip or something (if I owned it, that is) than use the digital copy.

Agreed. When I realized I had an expiry date on this disc I just bought that prominently says "DIGITAL COPY!" in the ad, I laughed out loud, out of disgust.

If I want their movie on my iPhone in the future, I'll just download it from a torrent. I've spent $20 to buy your dang Blu-ray, no way in heck do I feel any guilt whatsoever in downloading a film just because they put an arbitrary date on the digital copy they are advertising like it's the next big thing.

I've been pretty happy with my Blu-Ray experience so far, but this digital copy crap is just silliness.

Has anyone actually had experience with a Digital Copy not working because it expired?

I just loaded Nightmare Before Christmas onto my computer and then my iPod (after it's expiration date) and it worked fine.
