When does the parts between End of The Hobbit and Beginning of LOTR take place?
Peter Jackson invisioned that The Hobbit would be two movies filmed at once. (much the same way LOTR was all filmed at once). The first film would be based off the book The Hobbit, while the second film would bridge the time between Bilbo returning to Hobbiton with the ring and Frodo leaving with it.

These events are documented - at least in title - in Appendix B or The Lord of the Rings. If you own a complete copy of the book, its in there. More detail to some of these stories can be found in other Tolkien books, none of them which are complete (I don't believe the Similarion applies here, correct me if I'm wrong), and are more notes of events than anything else.

The trick will be picking which events (the first meeting between Gandalf and Aragorn is probably a must have, as well as the battles which happened during this time) will be included in the script, and if those events can be referenced without having rights to all the literature. The lawyers are going to have a field day with this one.

It may just come down to the title and main focus of the film. I mean, LOTR had some elements not found in the book, but in other writings. Yet, they didn't have rights to those notes. Could be very interesting, especially since Christopher Tolkien isn't exactly thrilled about the entire process.

There were def light hearted moments in LOTR, with happy music etc...They can easily make this movie seem less dark, BUT realistic with tones from the Trilogy at the same time. Elves don't have to go "tra la la" while dancing for it to be a light hearted film. This is essentially what Del Toro has already stated he will do with the film.

One common misconception that I've been hearing in this thread is that it will be a bridge film. Del Toro has stated that this will be an "integral chapter of the story". It will tell essential stories on how many of the characters came to be and be a "volume" of the 5 films rather than a bridge or a filler.

Ah, this should be quite interesting in that case. So it's alright to assume the second film in The Hobbit would be an original film, since the first will in the context of the book?

Either way I'm VERY excited. Thanks for the insight.

The only books Tolkien ever completed in full was The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Silmarillion was very close to being complete, but his son had to end up finishing it. The rest of the stuff is collections of unfinished works ("Unfinished Tales") as well as collections of notes ("History of Middle-Earth Vol 1-12") which give more insight into histories and side-stories.

As I understand it, MGM has rights to both completed books, so they use anything from those. Thankfully, a lot of the info is in the Appendix of LOTR, so they have access to all of that. The Silmarillion is timed WAY before The Hobbit, so that shouldn't be an issue, though having access to "Unfinished Tales" or "History of Middle-Earth" would be helpful in authenticating the story.

But yes, the second film will be a complete fabrication of the writers, trying to link The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings using a timeline established by Tolkien.

So one movie will be the Hobbit and the other will be a period piece on the daily goings-on of Hobbits?

A lot of stuff happened during that time - a lot of important stuff. You'll probably see some Hobbit stuff - like
[Show spoiler]Frodo being born and then losing his parents
- but there was a lot stuff regarding Sauron and his return to Mordor. Plus, as I mentioned in my previous post, Aragron marries Arwen and meets Gandolf during this time.

Well I don't think they're complaining, I mean they were well compensated.

But yeah,
[Show spoiler]Frodo's birth, Gandalf and the necromancer, possibly more story to cover before the Hobbit and span the space between the Hobbit and LotR

The bridge movie will be extremely interesting. while a lot happened, it needs to be tied together through SOME form of narrative for it to be an interesting film. It can't just be chapters about various people here and there.

I can't wait for the Hobbit. I love love love that book and I actually hope they somewhat stick to the feel of it. It always felt much more fantastic to me than LOTR, the wood elves and their wine, Bjorn, the spiders... it's less black/white and less pure evil, more magical. Honestly I can't imagine a better director for The Hobbit.

There were five wizards, but the white council also included other important beings such as Elrond and Galadriel (Cirdan and Celeborn also, perhaps?).

There is actualy one more wizard in the books (TLOR) beside Gandalf & Saruman, he's briefly seen with Gandalf and he is the one sending Gandalf to Saruman. Ragadast the Brown (I hope I spelled it right?)

They are going to get as much as they can out of this one. Sam Jackson will probably find a way to make it more than one movie.

It's gonna be a pain in the ass to even make a decent prequel film (its NOT a bridge) You'll have to get back a lot of actors to portray enough substance to fill an entire film. Otherwise it will be like the LOTR:Conquest game that just dropped...You'll have beautiful shots, Weta realism, but not even the actors voices (referring to the video game)
