Ok, so - I'm torn between the 606 and 706.

Does the 606 have any kind of feature that enhances the sound at low levels?

I've heard that the 706 had THX Ultra (basically, when the sound is turned down it enhances the surrounds and bass so you still get a "full" sound.) However, I also heard you can use the Audessy EQ - does the 606 have this?

Thanks,

EDIT: What's the difference between Audyssey Multi EQ and Audyssey 2 EQ????

That is kind of expensive for me. I want to have enough money left to buy the Monitor 60s and CS2.

706 Auydssey MULTI EQ vs. the 606 Parametric 2EQ.

Is this worth the upgrade to the 706 (almost $200 more)?

Really, I don't see anything else that truly warrants an upgrade (100 vs 90 watts, etc.)

I'd really appreciate any info/opinions you guys have on this.

REAL close to pulling the trigger on one of these - but I need this one little bit of info explained.

PLEASE HELP!

The 606/605 both have a night-time listening mode. The 606/05's only works with bitstreamed sources, and not PCM. IE when I use the PS3 via PCM, it states that the nigh-time mode is disabled. I'm not sure about the 706, but from the sounds of the THX cert, it does.

If that's something you need, pick up the 706. If it's just the EQ you're looking at, just go ahead and get the 606. You're probably going to use the Audyssey anyway.

Wait.....are you saying that it doesn't accept PCM from the PS3? How will I be able to listen to DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD?

Hopefully someone can clarify this for me. I have a PS3 and I just got an Onkyo 606. I put in TDK and I'm getting no sound from the rear speakers.

So, am I really getting TrueHD if the receiver if it says PCM Multi CH HDMI?

The PS3 will decode them and send out as Linear PCM, the receiver wont say DTS-HD MA or True HD but your getting it.

Thank you. The speaker problem was a wiring problem. I hooked them up to the wrong inputs on the back. duh.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Thanks for clearing that out.

Hmmmm, that sucks. I hope I get the nighttime listening options on the 706 (since I'll be using the PS3 via PCM).

Thanks for the info - if it doesn't work - you probably saved me lots of time trouble-shooting.

EDIT: Btw, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the 706 - arrives tomorrow!

My 705 is better than the 606, so I would go with the 706 if I were you, or maybe the 805. Basically, more listening modes, custom input labeling, etc.

Audyseey 2EQ only gives 3 listening positions (The middle and 3m from left/right of middle). MultiEQ has more listening positions. I used six positions for my 705, but i think it can go up to 8.

Yeah, my point was if the EQ was the only thing that put the 706 over the 606 for someone personally, just buy the 606. I don't personally think MultiEQ is going to be that dramatically different than a three-position setup. That alone doesn't make the 706 worth it. To me, it's the extra wattage, the processing modes, the THX certification, the MultiEQ and the cool glowy blue dial that make it worth looking at.

Also, to clarify to PS3Beyond, I wasn't saying the 606 doesn't accept HD codecs, I was referring to the night-time listening mode. You took that sentence out of context.

I ended weighing all those factors in - and went with the 706. It went down to $488 on amazon with free 2 day shipping, so I figured I'd go ahead and get it - I also got the Harmony 880 with it too.

I really hope to hear a big difference. My current receiver is nothing to brag about - but my speakers sound pretty good. I really hope the upgrade is obvious.

Edit: Oh, and I didn't know the 606 didn't have the blue light! Really dodged a bullet there!

LOL... you guys sound like my buddy at work. He just got the 706 (can't open it till Christmas...doh!) and he keeps talking about the blue dial.

Really, I'm kind of glad mine doesn't have it. Between my PS3, my HDTV, and my APC HT10 all having blue LED's all over them, that might have been overkill. I have to admit it's kind of neat though.

Nope. We're moving to a house on Tuesday so I will get it after everything is settled.

And yes, looks like the 606 doens't have the blue light like the 805 does but it's still good.

hahaha... if there is too much LED going on, you can always disable the blue-light!
