BTW- the optimal setup doesn't require hardly any money at all. Some of these fallacies completely turn me off, but I find that many people violate these simple rules:

1) NOTHING should be placed in front of your screen. This means PS3, Xbox, players, receivers, speakers, stuffed animals, etc. Your screen should simply be a screen. Speakers are best built in the walls, but if you can't do that, stick them off to the far side, and not NEAR the screen. I've also seen many setups, where people literally put gaming consoles infront of hte screen, and move the screen to the very back of the stand. People who have sunk many thousands into their setup still do this, and I consider it a waste of money.

2) Some people think VESA is godliness. It is when it is done right, especially at the correct height. You never should be looking "UP" to view a movie. VESA means that the screen is sunk back even more, and your clutter of expensive crap is protruding in-front of the screen.

Just about all VESA stands I have seen break these rules as well. The TV is mounted in the back, while all the crap is placed in-front.

3) Nothing should be lit up during viewing. I've seen a picture of the most beautiful home theater ever. This guy had carpeted walls, theater seats, a 1080p projector with a large screen. Just looked fantastic. But he had a damned lighted popcorn stand right to the left of the screen. This is a major distraction. Nice decoration, but please stick it in the rear of the room. I always have trouble posting pictures of what I am talking about, because the Picture thread of people's theaters is so hard to find.

Most of all setups on this board I see break these rules. Sometimes a minimalist setups don't break these rules, and can allow for a better viewing. Here is my setup (I am a graduate student, so I cannot afford very much).

You have a Toshiba tv. You don't get an opinion here!

Just kidding Simple. The way it should be!

I'm a bit confused, because you listed the rules, and then posted some pictures of ideal setups, but some of those were still breaking the rules.

Anyhow, I can relate to not affording much being a student. Last year, while finishing up grad school, I had a pretty minimal setup. I still had a full 5.1 system going (I'm sure the people who lived below me loved it), but otherwise it looked pretty basic. But I broke the "speakers near the TV" rule. Oh, and my center channel was a bit low (I put it on the highest shelf of the TV stand I had...so that it wasn't blocking any of the TV).

I think there was one that had two tower speakers flanking the TV.

Speakers look to be at the same depth as the TV (can't tell by the picture), but you might be right in the other sense on flanking; speakers would probably be best setup by spacing them out further from the TV. The TV is not the unit that gets surround sound, but the seating area of the audience. Good call.

Well I wasn't just talking about felth, more or less my NONE decore.
When you created the thread I wasn't just thinking a mess.

When I walk in my apartment it's fine. Looking at the pic's of the apartment and not having anything on the walls no decore. Like you said no window treatment and I was thinking wall treatment. I was thinking I have no taste and then someone posted that in my gal, then this thread.

I'm a single guy, I come home and flop down on the couch(YES I SAID FLOP DOWN ON THE COUCH, My grandparent use to fuss at me about doing that) to watch a movie or play some games and im content ass long as my place is clean.

BUT

Not much to clean.... lol... I don't buy that much stuff..

No I don't take them off. I actually hate trying to put them back on. I did it, because I seen other take them off.

You're makin me blush here,

All in all, in my opinion, it's not whether or not they've followed some sense of aesthetics or decor - as long as the place is CLEAN. Organized. It doesn't take that long. I dedicate an hour or so a week to clean up the living room - mop, vacuum, dust, put everything back in its intended place. And the end result is it keeps looking great every day.

LOL @ this thread... I keep my center on top of my stand... is that a violation???

everyone has different tastes... Some like window treatments..rugs..home decor.. etc, some don't.... that's why we all can rate the way we see fit!

The only type of setup i hate to see... is when any object.. cuts off part of the tv screen ( few here have their center channel that covers an inch of the actual screen

I agree with the OP. If you're going to be taking pictures to show off your home theater, then pick up the clutter. It's like getting ready for a date or going to work, shave and look presentable. You might not have much and it may not be all that impressive compared to others, but at least shine up what you've got.

As for window treatments, painting (well...not so much the painting) and area rugs and all that, I see that as personal preference.

For example, I think JJxiv's setup is VERY clean and well organized, but I don't like those sound dampeners on the walls or his flooring. That's personal taste, and whiel I do not like the 'theme' of his setup, it is very well done. It's just not my personal thing--the camel colored leather chair being the exception, of course. (I have one almost exactly like it)

I think in some of the 'questionable' setups, people are simply excited to show off thier setup because it took a lot of time and effort to get the equipment, and the desire to get the pics up online supercedes the desire to finish up the setup.

I just don't see the difference between 'messy' setups and the ones that aren't fully completed. I would hope that those who have the messy ones will update when they get it straightened out, just like I hope those who have rooms in progress update when they're done.

wall speakers actually have excellent sound. it really depends on what you're getting and where you're getting them from. but wall speakers though have amazing sound. i was actually looking a wall speaker set up, but they were just too expensive. i am not made of money (don't know why so many think i am) and just can't afford it. but i would love to have it. they're actually what i would have in a home theater system. it's what theaters use. are you saying theaters don't sound good?

Just to clarify, when I said area rugs and window treatments - I don't expect those to be the basis and MUST HAVES. It was just an example I threw out as something to do to help "freshen up" your area.

This thread is about what some have already touched one. It being if you are going to take pictures of your "setup", at least have the decency to pickup, clean up, remove personal items from the view of the camera. Also, expect criticism.

I agree with the OP. I can't stand dirty, cluttered media rooms. If you're there to watch a movie or tv or game, the screen should be the focal point and everything around it needs to compliment it. I spent a lot of time making sure I had nothing to distract or reflect.

I'm also lucky in that mine is in the basement so everything is stored behind the viewing area and if I start getting the collectible toys and stuff, I still have plenty of room to store them.

Sometimes you have to work with what you've got but minor details make a huge difference.

Bamboo is the in thing. No, don't kill yourself

Yes, left side - view all galleries. Should put them alphabetical.

I agree with the OP regarding some of the posted home theater pics here.

There's nothing wrong with having a variety of setups here, but damn people, clean your house and tie those loose cables
