I can take 'em or leave 'em. I like the making of features, but don't really care for the commentaries. One feature I wish they'd start adding that they used to use in the early days of DVD is the cast and crew filmogrophy and bio's. I always liked finding out facts about the actors and directors from the movies and knowing what other movies they have done. Especially if it was someone I wasn't familiar with and I liked their performance. It was nice having it on the disc and not having to look on the internet for information.

i love commentaries by directors and producers, i like commentaries by technicians and writers, and usually loathe commentaries by actors ("Oh! I remember this day! It was cool!" - or they talk about their character in the third person in stilted, pretentious ways). i almost always do the commentaries, though. even on bad films. sometimes especially on bad films.
"featurettes" are almost always worthless. especially when they are merely PR packages that were played on HBO or something between films. i usually ignore these unless i really love the film. original docs produced for the film's home video after-life are a mixed bag. usually you can tell within the first five minutes and make the decision to bail or not. |

For me it depends on the film. If we're talking about Blade Runner, then of course I would want all the special features possible. For a film like The Devil Wears Prada or something...I could care less whether it has any special features at all.

I love special features, and their inclusion will sometimes help in my decision to purchase a disc. A bare-bones disc of one of my favorite movies is always a disappointment, and seems pointless considering all the space available on these discs to store such information.
The features are usually educational and one can gain great insight into how the film was created. |

When I see news like Universal spending $750000 on a feature, I actually applaud their enthusiasm, but on the other hand I can guarantee they wasted their money. I'd wager that they would not get a single sale on the strength of that money they spent on that feature. Ie, who would be looking at a title to buy and go gee, I think I'll buy this so I can use this feature. It wouldn't be a deciding point on a sale.
