You mean pile.

As for carpet - http://www.flor.com - Does not get much better than that! The possibilities are endless. Durable, cost effective, green, washable and easy to put down.

I did, for one. It's easy to clean, and you can put a nice rug over the areas that are prone to reflection.

I hate dust over everything, and carpet=dust.

carpet

as for people that mentioned too dead, we are talking movies in 5.1 and not music in stereo, the multi directionality of sound should be taken into consideration when the surround is created. If the surround is properly created and the equipment properly set up I don't think there is such a thing as too dead (now if it is stereo music, none of what I said holds true)

as for earphones, you lose all the surround.

but as mentioned by others carpet is the best, but not only for sound but it is also less light reflective (then wood), makes less noise (when walked upon)...

Definitely wood flooring like a professional studio you want those LFE subs rumbling up the floor not getting sucked up by carpet. A totally dead room is no good you want a little echo like a concert hall. If you want dead with no imaging just buy Bose speakers, he he he...

Sometimes the majority is wrong this could be that case.

Carpets are definitely the best decision for a Home Theater. Not just that it is cozy and warm but the sound is way more natural with carpets.
For my home theater I've even a special Crucial Trading Natural Carpet, i dont know if you know them but they are easier to clean then usual carpets.

If you had $$$, get those middle east carpet, some of those are very fine made, too bad u.s. and iran complex relationship, cause no direct trade, iran does make the world best and most pricey carpet.

Hi guys,
I am in a kind of dilemma because I want to replace my flooring in my dedicated ht! I would like to put in a hardwood floor to get rid of my carpet! I still would have two rugs on the floor but would it mess up my audio performance in this room! I think it would just look nicer and it will be easier to clean (dust).
My walls are treated very well with acoustical panels, so is my ceiling!
Please take a look at my gallerie and let me know what you think!

I was debating the same thing for my new build. We went with laminate over subfloor. On top of that we will throw a thick rug when out feet touch the ground and be done with it. Easy to install, easy to clean and will not make the room really dead which isnt good to begin with.

I went with a floating floor, carpet over a memory foam padding. Memory foam is just awesome.
