I dunno, for me it's pretty simple. I won't be replacing my entire DVD collection, but I will be replacing a good portion of it to Blu. There are just some movies I think would benefit from being on Blu. Both PQ and AQ.

DVD is still a viable format. There are DVD releases that will take a long time to come to Blu, and some won't be released on Blu at all. But any releases that come to Blu that I want, I'm upgrading.
I agree!!!
Why upgrade? It's because of the same reason we all bought an HDTV for picture quality, the HD experience!!! As consumers we were all informed that blu-ray took advantange of your new HDTV. Makes all sense to go blue on your favorite movies.

The movies that come I love and cherish, I don't mind double dipping, however not willing to shell out $30 for one, so I will be patient and get it at half price of lower.

I'd like to replace everything in my collection. Even the worst 1080p transfers are preferable in some ways to native 480i NTSC DVD versions, even after upscaling the DVD. Older films should be a priority for studios and consumers alike.

I totally agree. I still find lesser PQ titles like Total Recall, T2, Wall Street, etc. to be improvements.

Default Good Question

My wife asks me this alot. I'll not blind buy the blu ray version until I've read a review. If it get terrible reviews I'll stick with the dvd if it gets positive reviews I'll double dip if it's something that I'll watch alot. I've done with several so far and have been disappointed so far. My favorites have been The Lost Boys and Top Gun to name a few.

i have some DVDs that are worth upgrading, but i cant be bothered...

im not shelling out an extra $30 just to make a movie i already own look sharper

and since i can get *cough*pirated*cough* DVDs for 2 bucks a pop, id much rather spend $2 to get a ripped DVD quality flick than $30 for it to look sharper

any new movies i get i will get on BD though

For example movies like Terminator 2, Predator, Jaws, Robocop, all these classics that was already release on dvd years, why would you want to replace it with blu ray version? I watch Robocop in Blu ray and was disapointed. And it cost $10 more just because it is blu ray??? I did a comparison, the dvd version vs the blu ray version, and I hate to admit it, but on some way the dvd is just as good or better picture quality as the blu ray. Those movies were recorded in pre HD era so it was not made to be view in HD format. The closes is pop it in my Blu ray player and let it upscale.

For me, I just recently started my Blu ray library and I will not replace ANY of my DVD movies with blu ray. Movies that was made before the HD era is good enough on dvd with all the bonus features and special edition. Plus some of the newer blu ray release, it is bare bone compare to their dvd conterpart such as Terminator 2, Lion, Witch and Wardrobe, etc. Please dont flame on me, but I just want others input.
Audio Quality......audio is 70% of the theater experience. Almost all of the (re-mastered) titles out on BD are worth it........unfortunately Robocop was one of the few that weren't.

Clearly, the OP has never seen Blade Runner, 2001, or Patton on Blu-ray.

I re-buy movies on Blu that I love in the action, adventure, and drama categories. Not comedies though. I can live with DVD versions of them. I try, and read reviews of the older films before I buy though.

I'm still tempted to buy Gangs of New York on Blu even with the bad reviews of PQ because I love the movie.

Ouch, Patton.

So disappointing on a large screen.

I was in the same frame of mind at one point.... Until I watched my old matrix dvd and compared it to the blu version.

But I will be more careful when purchasing older films, checking out on the web to see if its a good transfer etc.

Some dvds look fairly decent, Cars looked great but probably not as good as the Blu would.

I kinda agree with OP... Am I the only one who thinks that a lot of movies from the 90's have sub-par transfers? You have old movies like Blade Runeer, 2001 ASO, Casablanca and Zulu that has GREAT transfers, and then you have movies like The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Days of Thunder, Terminator and so on, that have ``bad´´ transfers... I know every movie is not like that, but I think it funny that so many come with bad transfers! Just my thought

Whether the movies were made before or after the "HD era" is irrelevant.

Movies made on 35mm film are "high-definition" to begin with.

Remember slides? Take one of them. Scan it at 3,000x2,000 pixels. Voilà! Now you have a high-definition transfer of that slide.

Same thing.

I recently hooked-up my old laserdisc player to see how far we've come.

I stood there scratching my head wondering how the hell I ever thought Laserdisc had such great picture and sound. Compared to Blu-Ray, it was like watching and old VHS tape!

I think I'll be storing my Laserdisc with my old vinyl 78's from now on. They're a nice novelty but not something I'll be looking at and listening to very often.

It is really clear and obvious that BluRay offers a highly superior quality versus DVD. However, I still do not know what to do. It has been since 2 months when I got my PS3 and buying ever since blu-rays from US and UK (based in Spain), and the PQ and VQ keep overwhelming me whenever I put on a bluray into the PS3....I have bought 11 or 12 blurays which I do not have on DVD...but I guess in the near future I will be re-buying the same movies but on blu-ray, i.e. Matrix Trilogy, Pirates of the Carribean, Godfather, Lord of the Rings to name some.....darnnnnn

I agree with this; I love old British Horror movies Hammer/Amicus etc if they get the BD treatment for sure I will change them for my DVD's I have, but its personal taste also.

Have a look at 'Life of Brian' on bd that says alot.

My feelings exactly. I don't need to upgrade every DVD I own to Blu, but a large part of my collection will, eventually, be upgraded.

A major reason I haven’t upgraded more DVD’s to Blu is the price. Prices for a lot of the catalog Blus are still to steep.

for me it's even cooler to see a old movie that I have seen multiple times released on blu because I can easily see how much better it looks. I know it frame by frame and line by line so the details really stand out.

I was stunned by Beetlejuice on blu and hope it's the same with Ghostbusters.
