'Art' that requires an R to exist. Something that requires specific on-screen content to sell.

Do you think ratings, PG-13 in particular, lead to that? In any way, big or small?

The MPAA has always been problematic. Look at 2001. Great movie, rated G. Sure, I'll let my kid watch it, but I'd let her watch an animated movie that was made for kids (even if it's PG) way quicker. I don't think there's anything wrong with 2001, I just don't think a 2 or 3 year old needs to watch it. If it was released today, what rating do you think it would get? I doubt it would be G.

Hell, the sex scene in The Wrestler showed just as much nudity as that one scene in American Psycho (just with less women). That movie certainly did not deserve NC-17
Yeah but its other forms of sexual content too, like masturbation and gay sex, and they were just as soft as the straight scenes and they got hit with NC-17, and it always seems to happen to independent directors too

idk its very unfair

Agreed, the content(subject matter) is a little too intense for a younger audience, even if it doesn't show anything horrible

Although, I'm pretty sure it shows
[Show spoiler]the universe having sex with itself
, but that's a whole 'nother debate.

PG-13 is a necessity...
even if they happen to make some less than good horror films with it.

It's hard to say something like that in a vacuum. I think just to show over the top violence, drug use, etc for the sole purpose of appearing "edgy" is absurd. But if you look at a film like, say, The Wrestler, I just don't see how you can paint the complete story without the brutality of the weapons matches, or fully realistically portray the Rourke-Tomei relationship without the strip club.

And I don't really think that the PG-13 plays too major of a part in the "awards crap," because even if the elements of the film which would be objectionable were toned down, most of them just wouldn't be appealing stories to the crowd who would be restricted from viewing them.

On the whole, I think PG-13's done more good than bad. There's lots of films which would probably have never been made, without some kind of bridge between PG and R territory. My main beef is so many filmmakers now, pushing the limits of that rating...then resubmitting to the MPAA over and over, until they finally relent. I always think submission should be voluntary, but if you choose to then there should be a limit for "rechecking". After that, you either accept the ruling or take your chances.

I only have two problems with the PG-13 rating.

1. When films which should obviously be rated R are shoehorned into a PG-13 for commercial reasons (Live Free or Die Hard, The Expendables 3).

2. The mostly gratuitous "one use of strong language" that says "hey, we're edgy, and not, you know, for kids!".

It depends, some action & especially horror movies shouldn't be rated PG-13. For example, Terminator Genysis & The Expendables 3 should've been rated R & all horror films should be rated R or Unrated preferably.

Was going to post the same thing. Lot of good PG 13 films out there just don't like when some are toned down for it when they should be R rated. Can't imagine John Wick as a pg 13.

For a second there I thought the title heading was referring to a PG-13 version of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

I think it's that way because Youtube allows profanity but not nudity. You can curse at someone, or even kill them, just don't flash them or have sex with them.

Hitchcock could have written Se7en without any grime and it would still be talked about today. PG-13 is a weird in-between, but if anything helpful for the industry, it should be forcing out more intelligent scripts. That makes sense in my head, it's just not a reality.

Fincher did exactly what what Hitchcock did, in making you THINK that you saw way more than you actually saw.

Watch the movie again. Closely.
