The computer can support a BD drive just fine (in fact the new 17" can take a standard 12.5mm SATA slot-loading drive internally). There's just not currently an OS X playback solution available, so you have to use bootcamp and boot into Windows to playback Blu-ray movies. BD burning and data reading is supported within OS X.

As for Apple's "plans," anyone stating emphatically what Apple does or doesn't have planned is just guessing completely. Apple doesn't support Blu-ray currently, and won't up until the day they do. That day could come in 2 weeks, or not for another 2 years. What can be said is that discussions have taken place, work has been done, and at one point at least, they were fairly close on the hardware on software front. Licensing is another issue, though the new changes to Blu-ray licensing may be exactly what Apple was waiting on.

I think we may know the same people at Disney. We had a night-long drunken argument over exactly that when I was back out in LA a couple months ago.

I bought all three, but play BDs on TMT exculsively - I like it better(BD-Live works fine in it too).

No problems.

Sorry I stirred up such a debate! But thanks for all the info everyone, it seems we can all safely assume we've determined... nothing, haha. Anyways I have another question since there seem to be a lot mac experts in here. I asked in another thread but got no answers. It's not entirely related but here goes:

The new mac minis; is there any kind of HD output? I'm thinking if there's no Blu Ray drives coming in any iMacs anytime soon I might as well save a grand or so, and just get a mac mini and hook it up to my 46 inch Aquos and have my Blu Ray (PS3) and computer all running from one big glorious display... and it'll give me an excuse to put my tv in my room.

Thanks again everyone, you've all been very informative!!

The new Mac Mini has a Mini-DVI port. You can use a Mini-DVI to DVI cable connected to a DVI-HDMI adapter. Just plug your HDMI cable into the TV and the cables comming from the Mini and you are good to go. I know a lot of people use the Mac Mini as a media center instead of using the Apple TV.

EDIT: Actually, you can get a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter from Monoprice.

That sounds fantastic! So humor me because I'm the most computer illiterate person in the world. If I set all this up, I'll basically just have a mac computer running through my tv? I just get a keyboard and mouse and I can type up papers and browse the internet and edit movies and all that just like I would on a regular desktop?

Yup, that's the idea. I'm sort of doing that with my custom built PC. Just using the HDTV as my monitor. Granted there is more to my PC than a Mac Mini, but it's the same idea.

I have tried the DVI-HDMI and also the DVI-VGA for the PC input on the TV... I think the VGA connection looks better, and I am not sure why... I have tried this a couple of times, so I always use that connection now.

Yea, it all depends on what you feel is the best. When I hook my PC up to my TV with VGA it looked decent, but it seemed like it didn't have a great of a color spectrum as my DVI to HDMI connection. Blu-ray movies just didn't look good at all with VGA, so I switched.

I would suggest trying both and deciding which you like the best. You can always return the cables.
