Yeah I'm actually going to give Penn a pass this time considering the nature of the film he was in. Now if he had started going off on troups in Iraq or something then I would've been pissed.

Exactly. Everything he said was related to his win and the film he was in. Plus, he was in with his peers and he knew what it meant for them to vote. It was humbling in that he acknowledged why he knew people had an issue with him but, at the same time, may have voted for him anyway. I thought it was a great speech.

I was gonna mention that. I think he referred to people's "silly gods." Mickey Rourke believes in God, as he indicated to Barbara Walters. It's too bad he had to sit there and be subjected to that kind of crap at the Academy Awards.

Least surprising for me was Penn being an activist about something. Right or wrong, he always does it, and it's always a need for my mute button.

This stuff always reminds me of Robin Williams' interview with James Lipton of Inside the Actors Studio, where he said of his own speech that at first It's like slow motion as you're in shock, but then in order to correct itself the world speeds up so you can get back to real time.Then when you are walking off stay you think:"you forgot your mother you A$$hole!!!!"

Oh, totally forgot to mention that in my previous post! You should of seen all us girls watching yelling at the TV screen - "don't forget to thank your wife and family!!!!"

Her face (Robin Wright) went from tearful joy in the beginning of his speech, then a camera did a second shot of her and she didn't look too happy!

Hearing two-time Oscar winning DP Janusz Kaminski tell this year's cinematography winner to "suck on that" during the presentation.

It is quite obvious that besides his acting ability, Sean Penn was chosen for the subject matter which the movie is based on. Especially with the times, and the fact that gay marriage was banned, it doesn't surprise me at all that the academy chose him. I thought his speech was appropriate and right on the money. Congrats to him.

It would have been seen that everyone who died last year wasn't as important as Heath Ledger {they were shown last year but not this year} and it would have shown that everyone who passed on this year isn't as important either {as they won't be shown next year}.

In fact, that would have destroyed the credibility and respect of the entire process, elevating Heath Ledger above and beyond folks who only get mentioned once like Paul Newman and Charlton Heston.
