I can assure you that I, and everyone in my living room at the time who had just screamed because Penn won, were COUNTING on him getting political. If he won for Milk and didn't mention gay rights, it would've been pointless.

Yeah I'm actually going to give Penn a pass this time considering the nature of the film he was in. Now if he had started going off on troups in Iraq or something then I would've been pissed.

Bill Maher bringing up "false gods" was not needed. Wrong place, wrong time.

Hugh Jackman is a mega talent. Sings, dances, crys, kicks butt, handsome, perfect hair, .... he's perfect....I hate him.

Exactly. Everything he said was related to his win and the film he was in. Plus, he was in with his peers and he knew what it meant for them to vote. It was humbling in that he acknowledged why he knew people had an issue with him but, at the same time, may have voted for him anyway. I thought it was a great speech.

I was gonna mention that. I think he referred to people's "silly gods." Mickey Rourke believes in God, as he indicated to Barbara Walters. It's too bad he had to sit there and be subjected to that kind of crap at the Academy Awards.

It's too bad anyone really has to. It's not for Maher to say what one person believes is right or wrong.

BTW: Nice pleather suit there Maher, were your jeans in the wash?

That's because Hollywood is democrats; Heston was not.

Pretty pathetic.

Actually, from what I heard, Heston had a very liberal viewpoint, besides his gun-control fanaticism.

Pretty pathetic, indeed.

Actually, he was a staunch republican since the early 80's.

ANYWAY:

Most surprising for me was Penn not thanking his wife. That always bums me out.

Least surprising for me was Penn being an activist about something. Right or wrong, he always does it, and it's always a need for my mute button.

This stuff always reminds me of Robin Williams' interview with James Lipton of Inside the Actors Studio, where he said of his own speech that at first It's like slow motion as you're in shock, but then in order to correct itself the world speeds up so you can get back to real time. Then when you are walking off stay you think:"you forgot your mother you A$$hole!!!!"

Oh, totally forgot to mention that in my previous post! You should of seen all us girls watching yelling at the TV screen - "don't forget to thank your wife and family!!!!"

Her face (Robin Wright) went from tearful joy in the beginning of his speech, then a camera did a second shot of her and she didn't look too happy!

Whatever, when I win mine, I'll thank my wife AND my mother, AND I won't talk about gay marriage, the war, babies, and old people.

Biggest surprise:

Hearing two-time Oscar winning DP Janusz Kaminski tell this year's cinematography winner to "suck on that" during the presentation.

Priceless.

least surprising: slumdog for BP

most: no bale stunt by jackman, that would have been hilarious (even though i like bale, it would still have been funny)

It is quite obvious that besides his acting ability, Sean Penn was chosen for the subject matter which the movie is based on. Especially with the times, and the fact that gay marriage was banned, it doesn't surprise me at all that the academy chose him. I thought his speech was appropriate and right on the money. Congrats to him.

In fact, that would have destroyed the credibility and respect of the entire process, elevating Heath Ledger above and beyond folks who only get mentioned once like Paul Newman and Charlton Heston.

That is, of course, assuming that the process has a whole lot of credibility to begin with...

They even failed to include George Carlin...

Most Surprising: Penn winning over Rourke.
Least Surprising: Ledger winning Supporting Actor.
