But on the other hand, you have a movie, a movie that for all original intent was meant to be watched, the original thought was proabably meant for it to be watched more than once, perhaps even countless times, it may have cost $30 to buy origianlly, and heck, may even be worth a couple hundred to someone today, would you really not lend that to a 'friend' or a family member? I mean, really? You'd say no? You'd say, no, I don't trust you take care of my $30 piece of plastic for a night?

I will put aside not lending the steelbook, especially if it isn't open, if that's you thing, that's your thing, I don't think a real friend or family member would have the nerve to ask you to open it, but if it is open, I really like the idea of just putting the disc in another case, I honestly had never thought of that as obvious of a solution as it is and I think the next time I lend out one of I mine I will take that route.

Well obviously the respondants to this thread must be at least 10 - 1 who would not lend the movie and a great number of those people also said they wouldn't lend ANY movie, nevermind steelbook or not. If you can't lend a material item that isn't worth case a beer you either have some serious trust issues or your just selfish. I don't know how else to explain it.
Calling us selfish is a bit out of order mate! Each of our collections is a labour of love, time and money. I understand it's only $30 to you but I work at a Blockbuster and I can see the damage done to our movies because most customers don't care about the property because it isnt theirs so they dont treat it with respect. I'm not against lending my cheap blu-rays out but when it comes to my imports or limited editions it's almost out of the question because to me it is a priceless treasure that I hold a great deal of pride in. I totally understand the people who don't want to lend anything out because it is their property and have the right to chose what to do with it. We are not selfish we are protective like a Mother Bear and her Cubs we jump through a lot of hoops to make sure our BD's are in mint condition and make sure they're safe. One man's just is another man's treasure.....

(but then again you're right to it is just plastic/steel and I see your point I just don't feel selfish is the right word, I prefer cautious )

I lent my mate my UK Avatar Steelbook, and I remembered that I had left the lenticular art cards unopened, so I txt him to make sure he wouldn't open them. He thought I was a right sad act. But thankfully he left the art cards alone.

I have some mates that I can trust and I could lend them anything, and I have another set of mates who I wouldn't lend anything too let alone Steelbooks.

IMO the big problem with loaning Steelbooks is the fact people don't understand the collection value they possess to us collectors (or should I just say freaks). I know many people I would loan my car without a doubt but I still wouldn't even dream of handing a Steelbook to them. Because, if you loan your car you don't have to stress that please don't sratch it, be careful when parking etc. because people understand it without saying. No one damages your car on purpose when loaning it, but non-collectors rarely understand the value of collectable items and don't handle them properly. It's not the money that is the problem, I don't care if I get 30$ Steelbook scratches and lose 50% of the value but it's more like the irriation of working hard to get it (if it's a rare one) and then all the trouble of possibly finding a new one, getting it home through mail without dents etc.

It's a bit same thing if your friend was collecting comic books and you would ask him to loan some really rare ones and then would return them with pages missing or coffee spilled on the cover etc. I know few people who are real comic freaks and I can imagine they would go absolutely nuts. I doubt they would calm down if you say: hey, world didn't stop moving even though I ripped off the page 12. People who say they don't care if it comes back with scratches, world does not stop moving etc have not had enough problems with ordering Steelbooks. Or they aren't freak enough It feels almost like a dream come true to get Steelbooks via mail without any scratches, so I'd be darned to get them from loaning it to a friend who just doesn't understand this.

Anyways, using an amaray is such an easy solution so this is not a problem really in practice.

I do not lend out any of my collection SteelBook or otherwise. I keep mine in excellent condition, my friends have, how should I put it...? Lower standards. They leave CDs laying around out of the case etc and I can't tell you how many times they put one on and it doesn't play properly. They do the same with DVDs and to a lesser extent BDs. They put it in the player and then blame the player when it can't read it because it's a "cheap player".

For that reason they stay safely at home in their cases. I used to lend things out and they often came back with cardboard cases dog-eared or scratches on the playing surface. They might be friends/family, but it's my money I have to spend if it becomes unplayable in the future.

They are more than welcome to come over to my house. One thing I do not mind sharing is my home theatre.

Anything of mine that comes in a steelbook, digipak, box set or whatever, I usually place in a jewel case as I trust nobody!

I hear ya. I used to loan my DVDs to my sisters and get them back with finger prints or sometimes the case would be beat especially the slipcover.
Once I made the move to bluray, my babies don't leave the house at all.
And no one at all even people in the house are allowed to touch any steelbooks.

No, hell, my friends/family tend to **** up regular cases/boxes, so I tend to just give them the movies in paper/plastic slips when possible.
