I am extremely sceptical of a new print. Until it is confirmed that this print is in fact better than the Studio Canal print, I'll be holding off. How hard would it have been to say they have done a new print and it is better than the Studio Canal print? Would clear up a lot of confusion. The fact such a simple statement wasn't made doesn't change my belief this is probably just a port.
It's not a new transfer, its the StudioCanal transfer.

I thought Seven Samurai was pretty boring... but yeah, Ran is good, much better in my opinion, but most probably wouldn't agree with me on that. SS is just too damn long and it gets pretty boring.

Anyway I just sold my CC DVD set yesterday so I went ahead and ordered this, should be here in a couple of days, I hope it was worth the trouble of replacing.

Ran is brilliant in all aspects, but for those who lack the patience for subtitles and/or black & white I would say Ran is the most accessible of Kurosawa's samurai movies.

I ordered this one today. I watched Ran many years ago, but did not appreciate it at the time. Looking forward to viewing it this weekend.

Here's a very good review by Dustin Somner: Ran

Not getting until they do a proper HD transfer. Upscaling SD ain't cutting it.

Yeah, I want this movie in HD, but I will wait for either a better transfer (which probably won't be for years) or else a price drop. In other words, the Price Tracker will notify me when it hits $15.

Despite speculations on a number of different forums -- including scientific shots -- the transfer is most definitely NOT an SD upscale.

I'd have to agree with that. If you haven't seen it yet and don't own it on DVD, I'd say go for it!

Got it today. Here is the deal- the picture quality is bad. Most likely the worse picture in my 300+ BD collection. That being said, it is a vast improvement over my DVD. I did not have the Criterion DVD, but the other DVD had horrendous picture quality, and this is an improvement. The sound was a huge improvement over the DVD. I can say without a doubt that this is the best this movie has looked, but I would be interested to see how it compares with the Criterion DVD. I bet the image quality is not much better than the BD, but I would assume it is slightly better.

All of that is only about audio and video quality. The movie itself is supurb. To me, it is Kurosawa's best film by far. I am not a proponent of blind-buys, but it is certainly an epic. If you have an interest in movies involving Japanese warfare, then this should be at the top of your list.

Please do, although the comparison will be academic for me. I have the "other" DVD so, despite the poor PQ of the Blu-ray I'll probably be buying it.

Thanks for the heads up BaronVH!

If the speculation is even necessary I'll save my money. It might be better than the DVD, which often do not use the full extent of their 480p resolution, but that doesn't mean it's HD.

DVD Beaver has already done a NINE-way comparison (2 Blus and 7 DVDs) here:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare2/ran.htm

I had the old Fox-Lorber DVD (horrible) as well as the Criterion DVD (much better). From the screencaps on DVD Beaver, the new Blu looks pretty good in comparison to the others, but the obvious EE is a distraction.

Speculating is certainly fine. And I definitely do not endorse the transfer. However, it is not an SD upconvert.

Thanks for clearing that up Pro-B. I don't own it on DVD, so buying was an easy decision.

Default "Ran" by Studio Canal has English subtitles.

So far as I know an english dub doesn't even exist for the film, and no one who purchases Kurosawa films would want one anyway. Dub-only would be completely unmarketable
The rental I got from Netflix HAS English subtitles.
