I have kids... But I guess I believe it is the parents responsibility to teach their kids that the movies/cases are not toys. A six year old should definitely understand this.

I wish they would stop putting these ridiculous slip covers out. What a waste of paper.

I don't, but It should be , and I don't see the studios very concerned about that. How bout they (studios) start by utilizing "green" or eco friendly manufacturing facilitites? Trust me...this is a little marketing gimmick that they had in mind for months. They care about $$$$$.
Marketing gimmick, yes. Most of going green is. But I promise you that it does actually do good. As far as the movies go, they are not going to sell more blu-rays because they have eco-friendly packaging, and I hopw the studios don't actually think they will. Green Manufacturing Facilities would have the biggest impact, but it is all about starting small. Going green is costly as first, but over time it is good for everyone, and profits. And yes, junk, popcorn, and soda at the theaters is very wasteful. I don't see that changing either, because movie theaters make 90% of their money on that "junk." Anyways, back to the cases, I am not sure if I am understanding you, but if you are saying that these cases are eco-friendly upon disposal, then no. That is not why they make these cases. It is because they use less materials and chemicals. Movie cases are not trashed often at all. They have long lives, due to collections, and trading, etc.

I also mentioned this in my first post, kids could be a factor, but I have a son, and I am sure that he could break a normal blu-ray case just as easily. He is a 4 year old boy. But my blus are in a cabinet that he can't open, problem solved. This really shouldn't be a factor.

I like slip covers, but you are right. They are very wasteful. Who needs to see the same cover twice. Usually one sparkles a bit more. Are we children or what?

Why do you need such a thick and durable case anyway? Do you wrestle people with a blu-ray in your back pocket? Blu-rays just sit on a shelf and if you have a big collection, occasionally are opened. I don't think the case will break if you open it. But if your child gets ahold of it, then maybe. And that would be your own fault.
I couldn't agree more. I purchased my QoS Blu from Target today and have yet to open it, but I will be angry if my case doesn't have this new green design. I highly doubt any of you that are complaining will break your new greener case. In fact, I bet that almost none of you had broken one of the older case designs.

Think of it this way, old records were extremely fragile and most were simply stored in cardboard sleeves. How hard is it to find well maintained records? Not very in my experience. Now a blu-ray disc is what, 10 times more durable (probably more) than a record? Stored in a case that is also infinitely more durable (yes even the greener case). So what is the problem? Treat your items with some form of care and they will last a lifetime.

It is an archaic train of thought that would lead you to believe that the actual disc is much less protected with the new case design. I would argue that if the new case design would get damaged in shipping (which seems to be one of the largest concerns), chances are 90% of the original cases would also be damaged. I obviously don't have evidence for this, but it stands to reason. The cases are very thin and where the material was taken away from the packaging the only way to break the case at the altered location would be compression. The case can only compress less than a quarter of an inch. Plastic is inherently flexible. Your case will be fine as will your disc. The cover art may get slightly damaged, but we are talking about an extreme situation. Besides a disc only gets shipped a few times at most in it's lifetime (where most damage could occur).

Anyways, rant over. . .I'll get off my soapbox. Just my opinion.

Exactly how does this help the environment? It is not like this is a soda bottle or water bottle that gets tossed after it is used. People tend to keep them. I can see that it would be worse for the environment if people are upset with the new case design, buy new cases and toss these new "environmentally friendly" ones in the trash. A more environmentally friendly thing would be if they were actually made from recycled plastic.

Looking at the new case design, I bet there is around EDIT 20% [nice article TruBlu] EDIT less plastic used to manufacture this new case. It's really simple:

Less material = Less oil needed (to manufacture the plastic) = Less energy needed to produce each case = Less drilling = Less environmental destruction = . . . . so on and so forth.

Why not do both? And I do agree, 100% recycled content for the actual case would be a great thing.

It is good for the environment because it uses less materials and resources used to make the materials. The parts that are cut/pressed out are probably remelted and used for other cases would be my guess. Plus some cases WILL get tossed and thus less in the land fill, the less plastic there the better.

Read this.

Seems pretty simple. 2 million pounds less of carbon emissions sounds to me like it helps the environment.

I tell ya what cases are gonna get tossed in the landfill ... these crappy cases that won't even protect your cover art inserts! haha SO many are buying replacement cases so they can trash these cause their cover art is being compromised.

Sorry I like to do my part but not at the risk of owning a lesser product.

HAHAHAHA! I just got back from Best Buy and I got Quantum of Solace (also picking up F&F Collection on Blu). I sat there feeling the cases till I found one that doesn't have holes cut into it!

If it protects the disks as well I want all cases to be a eco friendly as possible. I hate the slip cases over say Iron Man and the Dark Knight. Why do they have them there a waste to me.

I am only saying I like to keep my cover art inserts in mint condition I like to take care of my stuff.

Unfort. sometimes when you go to store or order off the internet they may have cases that will be banged up... with these new openings these cases can be more prone to care issues.

Now I know some out there don't care what their discs are releases in some would use a paper bag if they could.

I will also say there is NOTHING wrong with having a quality product. I am paying a few more dollars for my BLU RAYS yet .. I am supposed to take a case that is lesser than a DVD counterpart? I don't think so.

The cases are a bit cheaper and I voiced my opinion before under the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS thread.

Maybe if they could try to cover all openings maybe not as thick but try to be as decent of quality I can live with it.

again I recycle etc... but you have to draw the line somewhere.
