Dammit, I just reread it too. Now I'm going to have rereread it in March or so.

There's no way I can remember a whole book for a year.

Why, do you think it would've affected it any?

Read/hated the book in high school. Read/hated it again in college....twice. There's no powers in heaven or earth that will get my azz in a seat for this one.

I love the book. Read it about once a year.

Mixed on the movie. Good talent involved, but the 3D angle worries me. Just not the type of movie that needs that gimmick if it's going to be faithful to the book.

Not really if you look at history. Moulin Rouge opened in the same time frame in 2001 and still went on to get noms and wins.

I guess you don't want two DiCaprio films opening against each other on the same day. I really doubt the move has something to do with quality, there are no re shoot plans and thats a big clue. Moving it into January/February is not a smart move because thats a dead zone so the next logical date is spring/summer.

Don't worry, it's not going to be.

(Let's see, about twelve more naivety-crushing responses, and it should just START sinking in that we're getting the Ken Russell version...)

Saw the trailer for this movie this afternoon when I went to see Anna Karenina and it said it will be opening Christmas. So I don't know if it it was moved up again or if the trailer was mistaken.

Yeah, that's what I figured. For a second I got excited. I was thinking it must be a weak awards season and they decided to move it up again-- was already making plans to watch both Les Miserables and The Great Gatsby on Christmas Day.

Anybody else see this quote from a Playlist article the other day? (emphasis mine)

Quote:
"There's a lot of CGI man!" [actor Jason] Clarke continued. "Baz [Luhrmann] was explaining this zoo sequence and it's like, 'Baz, there are no animals, we didn't shoot with the zoos.' And he's going, 'Yeah, we're going to put them in with CGI.' It's like, 'Oh my god.' " About the soundtrack, which has also been the subject of much speculation, Clarke said, "He's got Jay-Z and Prince…"
Sigh...

For anyone who might just take that quote at face value, Clarke is completely positive about the whole movie in the article. He isn't bashing it, which may be the impression you get from the couple of sentences here.

I don't really see his quote as bashing the film - he seems quite excited - but I am bashing certain aspects of the quote in regards to the film. Once again, emphasis is mine.

Like Baz's shallow Moulin-Rouge wish of dressing up in the Old costumes with the New party music?
(Lemme guess, "That was such an innovative stylistic idea!" in Rouge?)

I remember when the Robert Redford movie came out, there was a big marketing trend-buzzword push to sell anything that looked like pinstripe suits and whitewall tires as "From the Gatsby era"...Meaning, cool-looking 20's, and not necessarily hypocritical social fascination with elite pre-Crash capitalism.
That's, frankly, MILD compared to Luhrmann's own personal interpretation of the word.... For him, it's Still About the Chiffon, only now it's got flapper sequins and fringe on it.

I don't know why that is shocking to you. We all know the kind of director he is, and the trailer already featured Jay-Z anyways.
