I think the question, as a thought exercise, is quite moot being that 15 months ago the sea-change occurred (WB) followed quickly by the death knell (Toshiba hanging it up). What possible good can come of the discussion? To flip it around, what could blu-ray have done to win earlier? Same situation...

sorry for the flippancy, and yes, we all busted out of the insane asylum (known as general chat) and this was the closest town nearby...come join us!

HD-DVD was actually killed when it was sat on by a fat lady named Bootsy.

That's a ban-able offense right there.

Use asterisks next time!

Anyway, I think technically something has to be alive before it can be killed, and HD-DVD was only ever on life-support at best. That's not really living, so it never really died.

HD DVD was killed by the ineptitude of the people who thought it would be a good idea to let two formats battle it out in the market. If i were the theoretical 'boss', i would have forced everyone involved to settle for one format right from the start. Of course, there isn't any such person in the world.

Seeing how Blu-ray has been taking off so nicely since the format war, the war was a big mistake and cost us a good two years of HD adoption. This time could have been used much more productively. Instead time and resources were wasted in a petty fight between brothers, instead of joining forces and going against SD, the 'real' enemy and tech to overcome.

PS:
My HD DVD player says 'Hi!' and that the rumors about his death are greatly exaggerated...

I waited until the format war ended before I purchased my Blu Ray player, but I always had a feeling that blu would win anyway. HDDVD's obvious biggest advantage was that it was more affordable than blu-ray, which is why many adopted it, but that obviously wasn't enough.

Other than capacity storage, I think blu-ray also succeeded in how it was marketing--the name 'blu-ray' and the look of the cases and marketing aspects of the technology were much cooler and well done than HD DVD, imo.

I agree with what you say about the way it was marketed. HD DVD was very poorly marketed, in a number of ways. For starters, the name is just terrible. Not that "Blu-ray" is really that cool in my opinion, but it's new and different from DVD, and it needed to be different. Throwing an "HD" in front of "DVD" was not a good call. Boring.

I've already expressed the storage capacity issue and how strongly I feel for that in how it makes Blu infinitely superior, but let's just say I agree on that as well.

That's the best way to describe it. Well done!
Every studio followed Disney when they decided to get into the DVD game. They did the same thing for iTunes movies. No-one wanted to release movies on iTunes till Disney showed up...then the flood gates opened. Now they did the same thing for Blu. I knew that Blu would win a long time ago. (Where ever Disney went)

Don't forget the fact that they used a whiny mobster to promote it.

I only ever saw it once on TV.

I believe that is the second or third time I've seen anything marketed video-wise about HD DVD.

The closing line was "it even makes my standard DVD collection look better."

My foot to butt method killed it, then I started collecting blu-rays. Not really, it was doomed once blu-ray hit the market.

That's pretty much what brought me into BD. I stayed out of the war and waited for things to become clear on one format. When Disney made their choice I knew the war was over.

Sorry... I just don't buy that one. THE, and I mean, THE premier exclusive title that HD-DVD bought was Transformers, and it had inferior soundtracks because they couldn't fit them on the disc. Just imagine where we would be now expecting the likes of "Gone with the wind" and "Lawrence of Arabia" had HD-DVD been the winning format. Compressed to hell, that's where we would have been.

Thankfully, this did not happen, and BD won, which you acknowledge to be the better format.

HD-DVD was not a good format, it was just better than SD-DVD

Disney made their choice in 2005.

as for the original question.

Like all jokes it came soon to an end. HD DVD never had a chance, like someone else said, it was always on life support and it was always how long before someone pulls the plug. The only reason it ever came out was to try and kill HD. Some, like Toshiba, wanted us to continue with DVD so that their cash cow would not die prematurely and others, like MS, wanted a wait so that in a few years they can come out with craptacular DL.
